My Quincey has grain kibble allergy. Should I change to grain free kibble gradually or overnight? I am going to change to the Canidade from some generic dog food.
It all depends on his stomach. I switch mine up all the time with no problems at all, but others would have serious digestive issues if they did this.
I also want to mention that a lot of people have been having trouble with the new candidae food, they switched their formula and it seems a lot of dogs had issues. (mine included)
I would go with a brand other than Canidae. My dogs did not do well on it. Also, I do not think Canidae is grain-free.
Good brands are Wellness Core, Orijen, Innova (Evo), Taste of the Wild.
Ditto, and Canidae is not grain-free.
EVO makes a small sized kibble that might work well for your Shi Tzu.
Start by giving 1/3 new and 2/3 of the old, and increase the new each day until you have made the switch.
Also, with a grain-free kibble you will likely feed less than you would for a kibble with grains in it. More of the food (grain-free) is utilzed by the dog...
Don't know how good it is, but I'm still feeling a little apprehensive to the company since the ingredient change, and price jack in the original without notification.
I looked at wellness core, or innova evo. They both sound very good. They also have different types of meats. I just worry of the garlic in some of the dog food. I heard that it can be bad for dogs.
I had once tried to feed the other wellness dog food that contained grains. He did not have a good reaction to it. He would have diarea, even though I switched gradually. I wonder if the wellness core is any better than the other. I may try the evo first.
If you are switching from a food with tons of corn and grains to a grain free premium kibble it might be a good idea to do it a bit more gradually. The new food is going to be quite a bit richer and more nutrient dense and may upset his tummy.
Generally they also eat less of the premium grain free kibbles, so overfeeding can be a major cause of upset stomachs.
I had once tried to feed the other wellness dog food that contained grains. He did not have a good reaction to it.
Didn't your original post say that he is sensitive to grains? So, if you fed regular Wellness containing grains, it is only natural he wouldn't do well on it.
Wellness Core is grain-free, so if it is the grains he is sensitive to, then Core would not cause a reaction. However, he should do well on any grain-free food. Evo is a good brand; I have used the regular Innova and was happy with it.
