capone has neck folds, and the prong will pinch his skin sometimes, leaving little blisters, and yeah, its the part where the chain runs through, the prongs themselves have never caused a problem.
I learned from Ed's videos and articles to use only the dead ring (i.e. both rings of the prong collar) and never the live ring. Maybe that's what caused it? Just guessing?
I too generally use the dead ring. The collar was fitted tightly behind the ears. I started with the dead ring and changed over to the live ring only since I got no (and i mean none!)reaction from the dog after 2 corrections.
The owner has used electric for avoidance situations (cat chasing, counter surfing) but not yet for basic obedience. I had already suggested it and honestly did not expect her to be so difficult and figured she would comply after 2 or 3 corrections max b/c she is generally so driven to please me (not the owner). The problem is the owner lets her get away with too much and it is now escalating. She's used to Malamutes and was much tougher on her other dogs than she is with this girl. I don't think she realizes how close to going off the edge this dog is. I've e-mailed her about that today.
I like your suggestion Mike - the comparison to pinching skin in a buckle collar. I'm sure I've done that at some point.
Just to add, I have a pitty mix white and brindle very pink and only one coat. She's very sensitive to the prong and I am planning on purchasing the rubber tips on my first payday (been laid off for summer no money). The thing is a choker tears her neck up as much and leaves angry red lines. Maybe it's just the dog and it's skin/fur? Mine (HS prong) only really pinches when she lunges after other dogs, which luckily had been greatly improving. Whenever that happend she may yelp and have little red dots maybe one or two. But her neck is red after every practice and class. It usually clears up by the next morning.
I almost forgot I have a question about prong sizing. I've watched the video, but what if the dog is right in between too tight and not tight enough. Mine is pinching skin when I remove one link, but slightly loose with it added. I need like a half link. I also use the dead ring.
