I'm going to be sending off my resume and cover letter to the local vet clinic for a Client Service Representative/Receptionist. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed, because I am getting a bit stir crazy in the house with just my daughter and I hanging out all day every day-don't get me wrong I love her to death, but... And I love animals and I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was young-which was shot down by my mother (long story)- and I've been thinking about vet tech school for a while.
Just wanted to let ya'll know, and wish me luck!

DITTO!
And may I add that even aside from the fun and satisfaction of working with animals, getting that employee discount is going to be totally fabulous!

Good luck on the job!
There was no need for the above quote in your post. Anybody who has been a parent for a day knows exactly what "but" means. I feel your pain.

Hi Keleah,
Following my divorce I had to jump back into the working world and my first job was working as Receptionist for a vet.
It was a fabulous job! You are on the front-line and even in a small practice the work day really flies. You meet interesting people, their animals and you get first-cuddle rights with all pups and kittens who come through the door.
You'll learn a tremendous amount about veterinary medicine...and most likely that will include hands-on experience. Plenty of Receptionists find themselves frequently helping out in the back or moving to the back full-time as a Veterinary Assistant.
And you'll see a lot of things: Bad stuff and sad stuff, to be sure. But you'll also see plenty of successes and miracles that you'll always remember...every day is different. It was, without a doubt, the most interesting and amazing job I've ever had. I loved it...and loved being the Receptionist FAR more than being the Practice Manager
And yeah, the discount is great!
Best of luck to you!

Good luck! I worked as a receptionist at a vet's office waaay back when I was first married (19 yrs. old). I loved the job! My favorite memory of that six month stint was when a new client came up to the receptionist window and "thudded" down two, rather heavy brown grocery bags. I looked up a bit startled to which he replied, "here are the stool samples for my two Irish Wolfhounds". About that moment, the "fragrance" wafted along as well...
Follow up dropping off your resume with a note letting them know you are really intereted in the job... can't hurt, might help and will get your name in front of someone a second time.

Well, I dropped off my resume (with a cover letter) today, about a half hour ago and talked to the vet a little bit. I had told her that I had been interested in maybe going to school for vet tech, but the closest school is at NDSU, which is a ways away. She said that Angel, one of her vet assist./techs is currently getting her degree online-and I suppose doing her practicum and video stuff at the office there. And I had told her previously when I had talked to her about applying, that I had wanted to be a veterinarian when I was young, but had the dream squashed by my mom when I was about 11yo. My mom had asked me if I could ever put an animal down, being only 11 I said no. That has changed now, and I understand why some pets are put to sleep-one day I'll have to do it with my dogs, unless they just fall asleep and don't wake up, it will be very sad, until then my dogs will live the good life
So, there may be hope, if I get the job, that I can work on getting a degree. That would help, especially when we can get our kennel going-my husband thinks that it'd be alot better if I did have my vet tech for a boarding kennel, people would be more trusting in knowing that their dog(s) would have that much more care if something were to happen. And since I know for a fact that we will never be without a dog (or many dogs ) and at least one cat, it'll be good to be able to have a better idea of what is wrong with them before getting them vet care.
I know that getting the employee discount will be very beneficial for me
And the vet said that the hours would be from 8:30am-12:30pm roughly, only about 20 hrs a week, but could work up to more. This way I'll get out of the house and my daughter can go to daycare for a few hours a day and have socialization with other children. So, it'll be good for both of us. And I'll still be able to take care of everything at home-even though I don't care for housework that much, if I don't do it, it doesn't get done.

Well, I have an interview with our local grocery store today at 4, not my first choice of a job, though I did put in an application before I put in for the reseptionist job at the vets office. I guess I'll see how it goes. The bad part is that when I handed in my resume at the vets office, the vet told me that Job Service had contacted her and wanted to post the job on their site. That might not help my chances, but who knows. It'll also take another week before I'll hear anything from the vet.
So, now I'm in a tight spot. I have a feeling that I might get hired on the spot at the grocery store, and I don't know how good it would be to ask them to wait a week for me to make a definite yes or no answer. UGH!! Why must this be so difficult?
On a positive note, I've talked to two of my neighbors about me helping them with training their dogs (basic ob. stuff). They have seen me with my dogs and how well they obey me and are open to my advice. YAY! It's a start.
