I was not sure were to post this so I thought I would do it here.
My dog is a little over 1 years old and loves to be around people. As a matter of fact he loves everyone that comes to my door.
I thought until these last weeks that if someone broke into my house my dog might try to lick them to death.
The other night my wife and I were sitting on the back of my pickup truck in my front yard. My male GSD was outside with us playing with some bugs on the driveway. a few minutes past by and my new next door neighbors drove up to there house. The second they got out of there car my dogs hair stood up and he grawled very mean and started charging after them. He only made it 2 steps before I downed him. While he was down he continued to growl and he was very pissed off. I praised him "for downing, and protecting" and took him inside the house.
For the last 3-4 months I thought maybe I over socialized my dog with people "because thats what the video said to do" and he would allow anyone into the house; however, for the last few weeks he has been very upset to see the mail man or if a stranger knocks on my door. "I always praise him for this action I hope that is ok". When I let someone new into my home I always introduce him with a lesh on or with his collar in my hand. If I allow someone in the house he thinks they are his new best friend. He will not allow them to go anywhere in the house without him. He will lay between someone new and me or my wife. He has never grawled or barked at someone new that I have allowed in my home. He is very nice and polite with them "accept sometimes he still jumps when he gets excited, but we are working on that".
I just wanted to say that Ed's website has really helped my family raise a great dog. Even though he has not been protection trained he still gets his point across. I think he has become a great deterint.
