Hi, was wondering what you all thought. We are getting a new GSP this week and he is 8 weeks old. Question is, would it be ok if we put him in his crate at night in the same room and me and the wife? One of my friends was saying that this might be a bad idea because then he will always have to be in the room with us. I guess that we dont have a problem with this and prefer that he is in the same room with us. The only time he would be away from us is when he go to work and he will be in the outside covered kennel. Just wanted to see your feelings on this. Thanks.

Sounds OK to me.

Hi David,
You will find that people vary on this a lot. I crate in the bedroom with me. Since I want my dog with me, it's not a problem for the dog to want to be with me. So, it's going to be up to your personal preference.
I don't know about leaving him outside in a "covered kennel" all day while you are at work tho. Again, personal preference, but I would not leave my puppy (or adult dog, for that matter) outside where something could happen to it.
Just one opinion...

My dogs are always in the same room with me as well, except when they are in the crate. They generally are within a few feet in the same room too, sleeping at or near my feet. When I leave the room so do they and when I am in the kitchen or bathroom they sit right outside the door and wait for me to come out.
I prefer it this way! not only do I love them and enjoy the closeness but its easier to watch the young one when he stays nearby!!!

ok, so what would be a better option then the outside kennel? How about a kennel in the garage? Or maybe in the laundry room? these would be alot smaller but again, what about spiders? I guess there is a possibility of him being bit by a spider maybe? Not that we have alot of them but I guess I could do this if the outside kennel is too risky.

The only reason I can think of not to do this is if either you or your wife have like me dog allergies. Only one of my six dogs at this time has bedroom privileges, and I have to keep him extremely clean to not have allergy issues while I try to sleep.
The rest of my dogs crate in the next room at night.

Yes, I guess if the allergy happens we would move him to a different room in the house near the both of us. I guess my main concern is where to put him when we are gone. My wife works Mon-Thurs 9-4. I thought a outside kennel would be ok, as our breeder said it would. But after asking others on here, alot of people are saying not to do this. But then again, I have others saying it should be fine. I guess the only other option is to keep him in a smaller kellel in the house somewhere like the laundry room? But then again, he could still egt hurt maybe by something I guess.

You have a crate for inside, right? I think pretty much everyone leaves crated pups in the house sometimes.
But do you have someone to let him out to potty in the five-hours-alone stretch?

I think its a good idea to have the crate in your bedroom - I always had my pups either in a crate or tied to the bed at night-I felt it helped them bond with me - now that their older they sleep in their crates in a separate room but I have one dog that Is allowed loose at night and he sleeps in my room on his dog bed One of my concerns with leaving a 8 week old pup out in a kennel would be that it will probably cry alot and that is just soo young to leave out by itself - I would try to figure something else out until it gets alittle older - When and if you start leaving him in his kennel just really make sure its as safe as can be and you trust your neighborhood - Do you have a fenced in yard and then the kennel inside the fence? Or is the kennel just out in the yard? If its just out by itself with no perimeter fence I would be worried about kids messing withthe pup and even taking it.. Just my thoughts -
Congrats on the new pup by the way.

My pups were all crated in the bedroom at night ...and they were in those same crates during the day when I was not home. (I came home at lunch for a mid-day potty break.)
I'm not a fan of the outdoor kennel, especially when you aren't home. I'd be afraid of a pup being stolen.
