I have 3 terriors, each weighing from 18-22 lbs., all raw fed, eating about 5 ounces a day,(except sundays when they fast, and only have breakfast and a meaty bone.) with supplements of salmon oil=.12 fl. oz., vitamin e=400 I.U., one teas of crushed garlic. They eat a variety of meats, pork, salmon, chicken with ground bone, mixed organs, steamed veggies, they also have one raw egg with a few pieces of grumbled bacon or canadian bacon about 3 times a week.
I have noticed lately that their coats are dull. They used to be somewhat shinny, being terriors. I can brush them and then they look like their coat is dry, and dull. Has anyone noticed this in their dogs and what remedies did you use?
thanks
Melissa: they are wired haired, but even as wired haired their coats were shinny. We live in Lake Elsinore california, and in the summer it is very hot and dusty. We live on a little over a 1/2 an acre.
I bathe them about one a month at the most. A good brushing usually keeps their coats clean in between. I use a soap that is made for dogs and for sensitive skin..I haven't changed their product since I got them. I do not use a coat conditioning supplement, never felt it necessary before, their coats were looking great!
The one thing I noticed, aside from the garlic, is that you give the same amount of vitamin E to a 20 lb dog that I give to a 65 lb dog. However, I don't know if that would cause your problem or not.
My dogs get dull coats during allergy season no matter what I feed them. Are your dogs itchy at all?
Angela: thanks for the tip about the e.., I have been giving them that amount in the beginning when I first got them, because they were really not very healthy and their skin was dry and flaky, maybe now I can lower it.
No, they are not itchy at all.
Thanks for your help.
