Too bad that there are many owners that will take this marketing propaganda as gospel. Of course all the vets pushing this brand food doesn't help much either.

I think the majority of pet owners probably don't give a rat's patootie about feeding their dog a healthy diet - after all, it's just a dog. I think a lot of those same owners wouldn't even buy Science Diet because it's too expensive - Ol Roy anyone? I suspect those that don’t do their research are simply not interested enough and don’t care enough to spend the time researching a healthy diet for their dog.
Those that do care about feeding a healthy diet probably do their own research and they don't listen to the vet as being the gospel truth.
Maybe I am wrong and the responsible (they do their research), loving pet owners who care are not in the minority....

It's been my experience that many people who buy SD or some of the pet store brands (Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, etc) do so because they DO think what they're doing is best. They trust in their Vets recommendation, assuming that a Vet would be thoroughly schooled in pet nutrition. They also see all of the advertising and marketing used by many of the companies and trust in what the company is selling. Once it is suggested to them that perhaps they have fallen prey to good marketing, I've found that many (not all) people are quite open minded and interested in learning more so that they can provide better nourishment for their pets. I've been able to convert a few such people in recent months.
Thanks for sharing the article! I posted it on my facebook and it has already sparked some good conversation about proper pet nutrition.

At least we know the author in this case. What makes me furious is when an individual (under his individual name) will post "research" and "facts" like this and it takes fifteen minutes on Google to finally find out that the individual is a VP at Hills/SD. I really don't care about their degree when they are an officer of the Hills/CD corporation. But how many people recognize the propaganda and hunt down the origin?
I love this quote from the URL:
"Published Bones and Raw Food (B.A.R.F.) recipes contain excessive levels of Key Nutritional Factors ,,,, "

Oh, WOW!
This should be illegal. This kind of misleading advertising is one of the things that led to the deaths of many animals due to the bad food that was recalled. Midleading people about what their dog and cat need to thrive, not survive. And WHY they even developed dog food and where the ingredients come from.
My little Mimi is the only dog I have fed species appropriate food, so I suppose some could say that she is just an exceptionally healthy dog since she has never had any health problems. Ever.
However, the ex's oxerg had constant ear problems, stomach distress and occasional hair loss.
She has had species appropriate diet for over a year now and all of her ailments have disappeared. And, no more vet visits. I swear, she was at the vet's at least every month for something before she had better food.

I just HAD to respond to these, my 2 favourites:
Disclaimer: I'm not a researcher.
Facts
3. Food poisoning is an obvious safety concern for animals eating raw foods and owners feeding raw foods.2
... because bacteria is way more dangerous to dogs than melamine contamination, excessive processing, and substandard ingredients!
4. Pets eating B.A.R.F. diets or other raw food diets are at increased risk for intestinal obstruction, fractured teeth and gastrointestinal perforation.3
while dogs eating grain-based, rendered 4-d meat-containing food are at increased risk for all other health problems.
OK.... I'm done
(obviously I was kidding about the first one... ) P.S. my own supper meat is always raw before I cook it...

I LOVE under the 'fiction' section where it says that wild dogs eat a lot of prey fur, and that helps coat the bones so they are less likely to puncture the intestines! I needed something to laugh at tonight, I guess, but that was so funny!! Someone really had to think hard to come up with that!

I admit that I have not yet read the article but I read all of the thread comments.
You may find it funny to hear but I believe there is truth behind this statement about the fur helping to coat bones. I've read it before in a research paper but I can't remember which one or where I got access to it. It's driving me crazy and I'm going to try to find it over the next few days.
I know I learned of it at a seminar I attended through the co-op I get my raw through. I will also contact our leader - she will know. Stay tuned.
