i have a major flea infestation.
i have 2 German Shepherds, they are outside dogs .
I realise you cant get rid of all fleas always, but i had the flea population under control at the old house, and would only see 1 or 2 every few weeks.
but since we moved there has been a disturbance in the balance. There are fleas all over the show, i find them in my car in my house in every room. the dogs are scratching like crazy.
Suggestions on the best and fastest way to get things under control again. the fleas i am finding are not all the same i am seeing adolescent fleas and then also adult fleas. its like over the last month their population just exploded.

I'm not sure what you've got in south africa for safe chemicals but treat the environment with a yard spray. Treat the dogs with a decent topical like frontline and give them some relief. I would also flea bomb the house
When all else fails call an exterminator. You are in a country which does have bubonic plague in it so this is not something to mess around with.
i have already treated the dogs, and i do regularly.
i have been researching fleas and i am trying to understand why the sudden explosion of the population.
i have sprayed the entire house, and this weekend i will be doing the outside. but its as if i am fighting a loosing battle. will be getting an exterminator in soon.

Often times you can improve results by switching chemicals for the dogs. Like here if we use frontline for a year we'll use Advantage the next year.
It's possible that your house is in an area where you are in a sphere of constant re infestation through other animals like stray cats, rats, or the neighbor's dogs. It's also possible that it's just a good year for fleas where you are. I've noticed it does cycle in some places.
thanks, ok, i will change the treatment the dogs are on, they are currently on spot on, its a drop treatment on the back of the neck and base of the tail.
When treating the house, ensure you use a product that also kills the eggs. If not, you kill the adult fleas, 14 days later you are reinfested. I personally think Top Spot, Frontline etc are one of the greatest things to come along since pockets on shirts.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
There is a thing that I would like to share on flea control. Last spring we had the flea infestation like none ever. I was told about "BAYER 12 MONTH TREE AND SHRUB INSECT CONTROL" it comes in a blue quart plastic container and can be purchased at Lowes for less that $20. It has the same active ingredient as "ADVANTAGE" and it is applied the same, right down the middle of the back. It only requires 2cc per 10lbs of the dogs body weight and it is used once a month. This really works my flea problem disappeared for good in less than a week, not to mention any ticks that I find on my dogs are always dead. I used it on 6 week old pups with no issues at all. I have had the same container for almost a year, it works great and saves lots of $$$

Hey Tom,
I never would have thought of that or would have been brave enough to apply it on my dogs not knowing what else Bayer put into that stuff. Thanks for the tip though, I'll have to look into it some more.
