My friend was called at work today because her child was caught buying "kid crack". Apparently it is made by mixing koolaid and sugar. In this case the child (who sold it to her) had made it and bagged it all up and was distributing it thoughout the Gary school. I'm wondering what is the purpose behind it. Could it be more sinsiter that kids being kids. Fist how does a parent see a child "bagging" it up and not stop them? Or could drug dealers plan on switching it out with the real thing and drum up new business?

I thought that koolaid packets were made for you to add your own sugar & water to the packets to make the drink. Or you buy the sugar free kind & just add water. I don't know, I never bought this when my son was small...to much sugar. He was hyper enough without adding all that extra sweet stuff to his diet in a drink. Unless they are adding something other than sugar to it??!!

its something I would discourage, along with that, kids copy what adults see, maybe a teacher or guidance counsler needs to ask the child a few questions

As the mother of a 7 year old, this has to be one of the most disturbing things I've heard about recently. Kids emulating drug dealers, selling 'kid crack'? Wow...

Emulating is right. I've seen kids pretending to be smoking canabis in the housekeeping area. Iam legally obligated to notify CPS(CHild Protective Service) when I see this. Unfortunately the area is Gary and they have a how do I say it delicately, a sticky fingers when it comes to finding money for public servants. Last I heard from a Lake County Sheriff Gary had 4 police officers. They really don't have the resources. CPS is understaffed as well so unfortunatley I'm thinking it's not going to be attended to in the proper manner. It's very sad. It's like the people don't matter. The roads are bad, much flooding of main roadways with small amount of rain, there was even a garbage pickup problem no money to pay. Talk about BSL, it's almost well deserved in Gary. The Fire department will not enter a house in Gary if a pitbull resides there. People with no business owning a goldfish get a pitbull as a status symbol, gangbangers love them they walk around with chains as collars and leashes. I followed a woman in Petco and asked her why her dog was so skinny. The dog could have been the the malnourished twin of my pittyx. You could see the vertabrae. She thought it was cool to show off her "pitbull". She acted like she had no idea the dog was too skinny. She hightailed it out of there before I could figure out what to do. Hey but there's plenty of money at the t-shirt stand accross from Michael Jackson's house. Maybe they're selling the kids crack as treats there as well. I don't know I didn't stop for a t shirt. I will now step off the soap box.

gary only has FOUR deputies???!!! you have GOT to be kidding-please tell me you are.
i'm originally from NE Indiana, never been to gary 'cause it's too scary (yep, i'm a poet as well). but seriously....no wonder crime's rampant if there's only one officer/shift in that town, heck he/she's probably hiding somewhere in order to live to see the next one.

I was born in Gary (of course the hospital I was born in is boarded up)! My family lives in Calumet Twp,Hobart, & Crown point. I worked as a medic back there, going into some pretty BAD ares. I live in SOCAL now, but we are driving back there this week for my niece's wedding. It is horrible what has happened to and in Gary. I have fond memories of going to pick up my dad at US Steel Gary Works, and then playing in the park nearby.
Is the school you are talking about in the city or twp?
Do you mean Gary has 4 SCHOOL Police officers, or for the whole city? NOTHING surprises me about Gary PD!

To get high. It hurts like hell but gives a head rush. They also smoke smarties and snort pixie stixs. The biggest danger is that it is a gateway "non drug" which can lead to more destructive habits as they enter the teen years (or sooner).
This isn't a Gary problem or dysfunctional family issue; this is just the latest in kids being kids. And it is not generational to today's kids. I am middle aged and did a LOT of stupid things as a kid and I was a GOOD kid. The biggest problem facing children is parent's bailing them out for everything and having the not my child mentality.
Much easier to practice risk taking behavior when you have the parent safety net protecting you for even the most trivial transgressions. I don't suggest leaving a child to deal with an adult situation but the next time they forget their lunch or homework let them suffer the consequences. Also if a teacher is telling you there's a problem with your child's behavior or attitude; there probably is. Most of all remember your own youth and that of your peers and realize anything is possible.
Now how was that for a soap box?
BTW I have 3 kids 20, 18 and 16, they filled me in on the "kid crack" thing.

That's very sad. In MY day, we could purchase "real" candy cigarettes, glowing red tip and all.

Kinda hard to believe, looking back, isn't it?
Scroll down on the link to read this:
There is evidence that the candy makers actually worked with the cigarette companies to attract young smokers. Here are some examples of packs from the 1950s...
