I am planning on buying a meat grinder and have one in mind. My husband asked good question that I was not sure of. When the manufacturer advertises the meat grinder will it say it can grind bones, or do meat grinders handle bones as well. We need one that grinds bones as well. We have found a great product, but it says nothing about grinding bones too.
Thanks for you help
When I was looking at them on ebay, I think the manufacturers all said they werent meant for bones but the sellers said they could handle them. I don't remember who, but someone on the forum uses the one from Northern for bones and said it was fine.
I have this one: TS110 and it grinds bones fine, as long as you can fit them into the 2" mouth. The description doesn't say anything about grinding bones, but the testimonials do.
I don't know what kind of bones you're throwing into it. But having to cut some things up, like chicken backs, so they'll fit into it is a huge pain in the butt.
You could easily get your hand into this thing. I drop the meat into the opening, and push on it with a 2x4 if it doesn't get sucked in right away.
I've done turkey necks and chicken backs in it. I've thrown them in semi frozen, and it still makes short work of them. To be honest, this thing is a bit scary.
If you want to go the hand-crank route, you can get the Porkert or Chop-Rite grinders. I use the #10 model. Goes through chicken backs, necks and wings with little problem.
Also use the little sausage stuffer attachment to make dog treats.
