I have a 2 1/2 old dutch shepherd dual purpose police dog. When I have attempted to complete scratch drills on scratch wall, he goes into object guard, sits, and barks. Any ideas what to do to get the dog to focus on the toy and scratch?
Thanks
Hi Lemuel:
I'm sure our resident detection expert, David Frost, will respond when he has time. There are a couple of other very experienced LE guys on the board too.
Question: When you say "scratch drills," do you mean that you are trying to get the dog to scratch at a box with just the reward toy in it and no target odor?
No, not at all. Scratch wall had marijuana in the scent box, and was using a scented reward. Got the dog to check scent box, scratched one time, tried to stimulate the dog with the pipe to continue scratching as he could see the pipe through the plexiglass. Dog went into a sit and began barking as in guard mode.
Thanks
Yes KNPV Dog. Scratch wall is 4 ft high, four seperated scent boxes below opening for toy as it can be seen through Plexiglass just above scent box at different levels.
If it's a dual purpose dog, I wouldn't be doing scratch drills where the dog can see the reinforcement in the first place. To me, that's like taking a college graduate back to 3rd grade for training. If the dogs isn't responding like it should be, there was a breakdown in the reinforcement scedule. Probably, rewarding the dog before it started to scratch or rewarding the first scratch consistently. Personally, I'd continue training, but I would only reward the reinforcement I want.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
Sounds like the dog is confused with what is expected of him. I’d put him back on the scratch box and work on “building scratch”… then build scratch under conflict and distraction….then put him back on the wall.
