#1 I have a year old black lab and I'm currently in the process of moving into my new house where I have built him a nice fenced kennel. My fear is that he is going to be very lonely. We have been living with my in-laws for the past 8 months and they have a Lab that my dog has grown to love. Is there some type of preventative methods that I can do so that this wont be a major change for him?
#2 Do you have any recommendations for what is best to put in the bottom of a Kennel. When I buy the Kennel blankets he just pulls them out and plays with them in the yard. I have heard that Cedar Chips, or Hay is the way to go? Any advice?
I have a one year old dog too that grew up with another dog, after that dog was put to sleep he was sooo lonely. I found having him in the house more helped and making sure he gets lots of running and play time in with me so that he is more tired.
If you find that after 3 or so months he is not adjusting you may want to look into a second dog. As far as adjusting I would try to put a towel or blanket with the other dog to sleep with to get his scent and bring it with you, then your dog will have his scent to remind him of his buddy as it fades he will get used to the idea he is gone.
As far as kennel bedding I use pea gravel but it is outside, soaks up the rain and urine and is fairly easy to clean, I am not sure about if your lab will eat it though? I would have to say concrete is by far the best, easy to clean, keeps their nails short and they can't eat it. I found cedar chips to be very very messy, they get poo residue on them after you clean up and yuck.
Thank you! I have the option of taking the other Lab that my Dog has grown up with, but I'm not sure what to do...I rather have just 1 dog, but I want him to be happy?
I may have confused you on my kennel situation. What I'm looking for is something to put in a Igloo type kennel, that he will be sleeping in???
WEll I know some of the igloos now come with a mat that fits perfectly inside. If I was you, try it without the second dog, and just make sure your dog knows you are the most fun thing to ever happen to him and he will probably settle in just fine. You can always visit the other dog I am sure.
