Is anyone familiar with the topic of Lepto? We agree with Ed on the vaccination topic and so have not been vaccinating - including the Lepto vaccine that our vet wanted us to get before we went on vacation last month. We went to Northern CA and Kasey played in the Sacramento River and other creeks up there, and now has loose stools and symptoms that are, in my mind, looking like Giardia. The fecal test came back negative, but I know there are many false negatives for giardia.
She is telling me now that because we didn't do the lepto vaccine, he could have lepto, and that is transferable to our family through his urine if he does. Can any of you tell me if this is true, and how common it is for dogs to get lepto? We've had dogs for years playing in water and never got it! She told me this on the phone this morning, and we have an appt in a couple of hours, so I'm trying to decide if I need to take this lepto 'threat' seriously or not at this point.
PS... check the symptoms.. Loose stool can be anything. Honestly if your vet is immediately assuming it's Lepto as opposed to the half billion other things that it could be for loose stool I would consider a new vet sooner rather than later.
The bacteria that the vaccine covers is a very small amount of Lepto bacteria that they can contract. The vaccine also has a very limited amount of time that it gives protection, not to mention the common severe reactions to the vaccine, as stated above. Just a money maker for the vets, if you ask me. I NEVER give it. JMO
