My 12mos. old female is still droping in weight, today we took her to the vet. to get a weight check, 59.6 down from 62 a month ago when we took her in for a giardi test (negative). Also today we picked up the re-treatment doses of panacur-c. I am getting concerned, Yesterday I ordered from Leerburg the digestive enzyme I read about on a previous post. She still has plenty of energy eats great actually we have uped her raw intake to 1.7lbs-1.9lbs. twice daily. I know we are supposed to keep them lean but I see her very thin. I told the vet. that we ordered the digestive enzymes and he thought that was a good idea. He also wants to see her in a month and possibly do a TLI test? He also said that there are some other enzymes that he might see about at that time. Sorry for rambling on. Has any bodyelse's gsd had these symptoms?
"Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a disorder in which the pancreas does not produce an adequate amount of digestive enzymes. This deficiency results in maldigestion (poor digestion) and malabsorption (poor absorption). EPI is most commonly found in German shepherd dogs, but can be seen in any breed." Symptoms:
Chronic diarrhea
Excessive food intake
Weight loss
Flatulence (gas)
Coprophagia (eating feces)
Pica (eating unusual things such as dirt)
Borborygmus (a rumbling noise caused by gas passing through the intestines)

I'm not saying that this is what your dog has...Just some info on enzyme diffieciency. Your vet is able to determine this if that is what is going on.

I want to add that IMO, Frank, you may need another vet.
I think I'd want a referral to a GI vet, or at the very least I would be making an appointment elsewhere for a second opinion, with the Giardia scare and the weight loss.
Thanks Anne, the vet today did state that it could be EPI but did not seem overly concerned at this point (but I am) also she only has the first 3 sympyoms. and the diarrhea is not all the time, acutally more like loose over feeding stools(I wonder why maybe cause I am feeding more to offset the weight loss). Connie I agree about a new vet. Do you guys think the digestive enzymes will help? And is this something I should have addressed imediatley?

But you did address it, by seeing the vet.
Losing weight concerns me, along with the giardia scare and unrepeated giardia tests (if I recall right), but maybe I spoke too soon and too harshly. Maybe the dog is not too thin. Do you have a good photo you can link us to?
Oh this vet is a new partner, also a Internal medicine specialty. Don't know if that covers anything close to a GI vet. Acutally not a bad guy thinks that us feeding raw is a good thing. (couldn't get that out of the last one). I will try to take a "Now" pic and link it. I hope I am not over reacting but the weight loss really does concern me. Would some plain yogurt help, until the digestive enzymes arrive?
Randy, everything is normal, she has always and still does have of TONS of energy. I thought for a while maybe she was just so active that I needed to up her feedings, but that did not seem to help, but eats great and acts the same as usual.

You might already know this, and my advice is coming from a human medical standpoint.. but remember that every person/dog is different and will have very different symptoms. Some will have all the symptoms, some will have none, most will have a random number of them.
The fact that she isn't lethargic and is still eating and drinking normally is a really great sign. Have you checked for thyroid problems? Thyroid problems are one of the most common causes of abnormal weight loss/gain.
