Ok, everyone, here's one of my vet's concerns about raw feeding. I have to admit it has crossed our minds, but I ignored it until the vet brought it up. She's completely fine with the dog eating raw, but she worries about the humans that live with the dog in two areas. The first one is the idea that salmonella and e. colli will be present in the feces, so you have to be careful when you clean up after them - duh! - even with a kibble fed dog this is true.
But, second, and here's my question - after a raw fed dog eats, and say they bring you their ball to throw, can you get salmonella or e. coli from the ball because it has their saliva on it after having raw food in thier mouth?

I'm sure you could if you licked your hands, licked the ball, or frenched your dog.
Is it really this hard for people against raw feeding to keep dog saliva and poop out of their mouths?
Not trying to be a smart @$$, but really, how hard did you have to try to prevent this before you ever heard of raw feeding?
So I guess, Yes. If you get dog saliva in your mouth immediately after they eat then there is a chance you could get salmonella or e coli if the food was also contaminated.
I will also say, with certainty, that there are no special precautions that you should take with a raw fed dog that you shouldn't with a kibble/canned fed dog. You should keep all dog's saliva and feces out of your mouth.
I don't see this as a "what I feed my dog" issue.
Please don't take any of this personal. All my comments are directed at the issue in general, not you personally.

I pick up my dogs' poop as soon as they go most of the time, or at least 1x a day, EVERY day. I don't want my dogs running thru it nor do I want to step into it or smell it on my lawn. I wash my hands after handleing my dogs right after they eat, or after a game of catch. Not to be crude...but...dogs lick their butts ALOT whether they eat raw or kibble....do you wash your hands after playing fetch with your kibble fed dog? (not directed at you Lori, just a general question) I don't see what all the fuss is about. I alwaysy wash up after fixing meals & disinfect the kitchen surfaces that are touched by the raw meats...even when I fix a meal for myself. I just think that the vets are looking for reasons to make people change from raw to kibble without having a direct confrontation with them....this is a round about way to discourage it. JMO
I will add that I don't have little kids in my home & I remind visitors, big & small, to wash up after playing with the dogs. But then I would do this with a kibble fed dog, too.

It doesn't have to be "people against". It could be people new to raw, unsure of raw, or misguided by professionals or text written by professionals about raw.
Didn't want it to sound like I wasn't taking your question seriously. It is a very common question and in turn a very common misconception.

Koen plays in the same yard that Turbo has crapped in. Obviously I pick up after him, though. But I am sure Koen has touched a blade of grass that has once touched dog butt.
He also throws Turbo's ball and frisbee for him. The only problem I see is that Turbo wishes he could throw farther.

What is it these days?
Wash this. Sanitize that. Run away from the other.
Jeez, when does one have a chance to live outside of the washroom?
I've kept dogs for all of my adult life and grew up with dogs as a child. I've been bitten, chew on, licked by, and slept with dogs basicly my whole time here, never have I gotten sick because of a dog.
If someone can scare you, it puts you under their power.
Stop worrying about it, life is a dirty business.

I am SO REPORTING YOU!
P.S. I agree that it's not good to french-kiss with dogs and/or eat dog poop.
More P.S. I forgot to mention all the e.coli and salmonella kibble recalls.

I just wrote a brief piece to this effect! I grew up rolling in dirt and horse manure, and made sure my daughter had the same experience, much to the horror of the "hand sanitizer" set. We almost never get sick....hmmm....
I've heard there is a fair amount of salmonella contamination in kibble, so why would raw be different?

I really agree with you on that, Randy! I was thinking the same thing. We've been feeding Kasey raw for 2 years and everyone has been fine. I have been handling raw chicken to cook for our own meals for 40 years and before they started putting 'handling instructions' on the meat packages, we all knew to wash our hands after we touch it - common sense. And most of us and our kids have played on grass that dogs have pooped on - it sounds gross. But i believe our bodies were made to be able to fight the bacteria and germs we come into contact with, and 9 times out of 10, we can.
Don't want to be too paranoid or we'd never do anything! I agree with Connie - don't eat your dog's poop, and don't french-kiss them!
