My boyfriend and I are thinking about getting an Australian Cattle Dog. His brother has two and we’ve seen that they are very stubborn and excitable, and MAN these babies tough! I’m new to Mr. Frawley’s methods of training and I’ve always viewed the prong collar as cruel. But little Aussies are burly dogs so I may need to use one. I went to the pet store today and put one around my upper arm and TUGGED! The clerk looked at me like I was positively crazy. Then I did it again…. And I did it progressively harder until it did hurt. I’m utterly convinced now that the prong collar is humane and persuasive. And now the lady at my local pet store thinks I’m really weird.
Welcome to both the board and to the wide, wonderful world of *real* dog training!
Good choice on getting an ACD, I definately want to try out one of them for training some day. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
My boyfriend's brother bought two sisters and they give him hell every day! They are sweet and loving, but only after you tire them out until they are just about comatose. I'm really excited, we are going to get a dog from the same breeder so we'll have the girls little brother. I want a dog that is tough but not huge, and the ACD fits that description.
All that aside.... I have some questions about jumping nippers. Arona and Zula are great girls but they jump up and nip at the face. They do it because they are excited and want to lick and kiss. How do you correct that behavior? I don't want our baby boy to have the same habit, someone could get hurt.
A number of years ago a club member of ours put a SchH I on her Cattle Dog.
Fun little buggers. When by brother asked me what kind of a dog he should get for a nice watch dog, jogging partner, and hiking partner I found him a nice blue merle out of working parents. Tough as nails and hasn't seen a sick day in his life. The dog's brother is with another friend and she does agility with him and does quite well.
