Hi Everyone: yup! I messed up and need some advise on how to fix
the problem I created. Luna has a great recall in obedience class
I use the word "front" she comes clean, fast and sit in front.
The problem is at the dog park. She refuses to come to me (cause
she figured out if you go to mom you go home) I'm trying to fix
that by letting her know that if you come to mom you get a treat
and not necessarily go home. The problem is getting her to come
to me the first time so that I can treat and not leash her to come home, repeat, repeat. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Put the dog on a long line so the dog learns that there is no option except to come when called! Stay away from the DP until he is trained for a recall. Dog needs more training under distraction, before it is ready for the distraction of a dog park with all the dogs running around playing. A dog obedience class is no where near the same as a dog park where most of the dogs are running around out of control, while the owners stand around socializing & not watching their dogs. I personally think dog parks are the worse thing ever invented. Your dog has not EARNED the right to have that kind of freedom yet. Work the dog over time with the gradual increase of distractions until he is reliable (9 out of 10 consistantly)in many different venues. My pups ran around with long lines until they were 'proofed' on recall before they ever had the freedom of no leash. I have raised 3 pups in the last 6 years with outstanding obedience this way. My pups were raised with all motovational training & no corrections were used until the pups were at least a year old for proofing & that was minimal due to the solid foundation in motovational training. I agree with out of the dog park. Your never going to get what you want in those conditions. Work on a casual recall separate of your formal recall. One thats meant for speed, not for a straight front.

I know alot of folks on the forum are anti DP's but I've been
taking her there every weekend since she was 3 months old. She is
very high energy and though my yard is fenced its not big enough
for her to really get a workout. I have never had a problem at
the DP. It is 3 acreas for large dogs, and a seperate 1 acre for
small dogs. Anyway I appreciate your thoughts on correcting this
issue we are having will try the long line and work for casual
consistant recalls.

I admit it, I'm anti-dog park for my dogs. My reply to you though Betty, was meant as something specific to your training issue.

Steve: Sorry, I'm confused. Are you suggesting omit the dog park
until I can get a more casual consistant recall?

Yes! Exactly!
T be honest, I am mostly anti-dog park, but if you choose to go, then do so. But if the dog won't come to you when called 99% of the time then you are setting yourself up for problems. Get her back in line and then reintroduce the dog park if you need to.

Hey Betty,
although it's hard to do, try to NOT call the dog to you and then do something negative.
You said you call the dog then leash her and leave the park, right?
Only call use your recall word (not sure if it's here, or come etc etc) for extra good things and positive things. And i agree with the long line. She needs to go back on one.
You can still call her to you when you want to leave, but don't leash her and leave right then. Call her to you, when she comes give her some scratches behind the ear for a minute or two. Or jackpot her with some exceptional treats. Make the leashing part a seperate entity from the recall by not leashing her as soon as she comes up to you.
But i do agree about the dog park, until the recall is down under distractions I wouldn't take her there, or maybe take her there (that's your decision) but I wouldn't recall her if you know she's not going to respond.
Sounds like now she's learned that at the park, she can blow you off.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |
