We just bought the Dogtra training collar for 2 dogs and Ed's DVDs (the one Ed recommends). We have started the phase this weekend, to find out which level each dog needs to start on.
FRIDAY night - collars were fully charged and we spent about 4 minutes with each dog slowly figuring out the level.
We had marked the boxer mix at a 35. That was her level without a doubt. 36 was to much.
We had the jack russell at a 12, 13 was to much.
SUNDAY - we didn't charge the collars on Saturday - perhaps this is the problem?
I wanted to double check the level and be sure that 35 was right. So I started at 15 and moved up. The boxer mix went all the way up to an 80 -- but I stopped here, not because she looked at the ground!
I backed it up now and again, as I approached 80 thinking for sure this will make her look at the ground. Nope. What does she do -- she lays down by my feet and stares at me and took a deep breath almost as saying, this is boring. As I was in the 75 - 79 range her body would jolt slightly. I thought for sure she would react at the ground at this point. So when I reached an 80, I tried the nick - you could see her body jolt a bit more at the nick and she just stayed lying down - like nothing happened. I tried once more, and again, a small jolt, almost like she got a nudge. I stopped at this point - cause Im watching my dog jolt, yet not looking at the ground and it has me a little freaked out and I do not want to screw this up. This wasn't in Ed's video - his dog looks at the ground.
What do I do with this situation - if her body is reacting, not her mind?
We have the collars charging again, but I am thinking - after 4 minutes of correction each with their own collars, wouldn't the collars hold a charge for less than 48 hrs? -- I stopped until I heard from you guys.
Yeah, it sounds like the collar wasn't connecting right. 80 would be a pretty rough jolt if it was.
I had this problem with both of my dogs and they aren't long coated. I'd set the level and both were right at about 30..then the next time I barely got a reaction at 100.
I bought the longer version of the metal nodes and put those on instead and haven't had a problem again. Though with my knowledge now I could get away with the short nodes again. The collar has to be real snug when placed on the dog and like the video says to run the box up and down the throat to get to the skin-that does the trick too.
