Some of you may remember me from a while back...I have a 3 year old German Shepherd that as far as I knew he is Dysplasia free 5 generations back. He has been showing signs of leg problems for about 6 months now. Whenever he plays even a little bit he starts to limp or whine when he moves. Going through a divorce and haven't the $ to get his hips tested and even if I did wouldn't be able to afford some of the meds the vet would want me to. Besides, I hear that those meds are bad for them anyhow. My dog is in pain and I am dieing watching him hurt! Please is there anything I can do to help him? Home remedies???Everyone wants me to give him aspiriin..is that good for dogs? Isn't it bad for their stomachs? At 3 years old am I looking at losing him early because of this?

I understand the money problems and being leary of the vet, but there is no way for you or especially anybody here to know what is wrong.

That's correct. There isn't.
All we can do is maybe help you get a handle on this near-hysteria while you wait for the vet appointment.

Stop. Breathe.
"Going through a divorce and haven't the $ to get his hips tested and even if I did wouldn't be able to afford some of the meds the vet would want me to. Besides, I hear that those meds are bad for them anyhow. "
Why are you convinced it's hips rather than knee/spine/paw? If you mean NSAIDs, then no, they are not expensive. However, they should not be given without thorough pre-protocol blood tests. And you don't even know yet whether the problem is an NSAID thing. ( No, you don't want to give aspirin either without vet oversight. Aspirin is an NSAID, dogs do not tolerate it anywhere near as well as humans, and again, you don't know what the problem is.)
Is he still/slow getting up first thing in the morning?
Which leg does he favor?
Have you examined that paw thoroughly?
Is he on fish oil and E every day?
Is his weight OK? Not overweight?
Can you make a little video of his gait to give the vet?
Is there any swelling or heat in the limb he favors? (Actually cup it, holding gently, all along the limb, feeling for heat and for any difference between it and the limb on the other side.)
Making and recording each of these observations is going to help the vet.

Sorry Robbin but I have to agree with Michael. I understand the concerns about cost but maybe the link below can help you with that end of things. It saved my life this summer with Thor and basically allowed me to provide him with the best possible care and not break the bank. I have an interest free year to payoff the bill. I hope this helps and your boy is feeling better soon.

Panic is really counterproductive. It definitely does the dog no good.
I get it that life is tough right now, but this kind of frazzlement makes it tougher.
I'd get on the phone in the morning and find out about the cost of x-rays and an eval. Then I'd make all the observations listed above, writing down the answers. I'd check Sheila's link first thing.
You don't want to go another six months with the dog even worse. So try to gather up the info, read about x-rays and NSAIDs, determine that you are going to find the best way to help the dog, and practice calmness. Nothing confrontational about this: Everything I'm saying is for the benefit of you and the dog.

Robin,
if you've been using the same vet for awhile I would approach them and explain your situation (financially) and ask if they could help you out by allowing you to pay in installments.
I find alot of vets understand the financial hardships people are suffering right now and will be more than willing to work with you on payments. Most don't want to see a dog suffer needlessy just because the owner is going through a tough time right now and can't afford to pay a large vet bill.
Trust me, i've been there and done that! My other dog had severe arthritis in the end and the times that he needed to see the vet and $$ was short they we always willing to work with me.
So talk to them, see if they would be willing to lend you a hand.
I know it's tough to see them in pain. But with something like this it would be best to take him to the vet just so you know exactly what you're dealing with.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

My other dog had severe arthritis......
And yet another possibility of the cause. Just too many to hazard a guess.

This may help.
http://www.dogaware.com/arthritis.html
I have a GSD with elbow dysplasia, I work at a vets office and I get 50% off of everything, I am very lucky. I still utilize alot of the holistic approaches of what is on the link I provided. I don't like to use the NSAIDS, they can kill a dog. I also inject Adequan 1x a month, great drug with little to no side effects (blood thinning, need to advise surgeon prior to surgery.
My GSD of late also had some hip issues. I upped his Ester C, Fish oils and Glucosamine, and he is feeling better. I also give Glyco-flex 3 with the additional Glucosamine I had mentioned, usually 2000mgs (give or take a few mgs).
Good luck.
