Hello everyone,
I have a question that I need help with. I am planning on attending a Dog trainers school in March, called Tarheel Canine in Sanford,N.C. . I plan on getting certified as a Master Trainer, and also take a course for Police K-9 Training and protection sports as well. My question is has anybody heard of this school or know anything about this school? I have been researching day after day and I hear all good things about it, I just don't know if it's the best one. I want to do this all the right way. I am from MA as well so it is kind of a big decision to go there for a few months. Hopefully someone can help me with this THANKS!

I don't know the school. But the first question I'd have is how long is the course. Many questionble schools make extravigant claims on how you can become an expert trainer in a short period of time. To become a good trainer takes years. I apprenticed for four yrs for PD. I then did years under guide dog trainers.
Any school who claims they can teach you in less time than it takes to train a single dog to competition level (whether sport or ob), is bogus IMO.
And there is the added bonus of being in lovely California, north of San Francisco. It's beautiful there. It doesn't get much better than that! Michael & California...an unbeatable combination IMO.
Ok, I want to correct my above post..... as Steve, who lives in the Bay area of Calif. has told me, Fairfield Calif. is in the North Calif. area near the Napa area but is not the exact same area. I thought it was right in the Napa area. I have been all over that area, but not Fairfield specifically. Sorry for the error, I wouldn't want to wrongly mislead anyone.
Ok, rather then making a long drawn out post I will ask this instead. What are your needs? What kind of experience do you have? There are a few good schools, the hard part is finding a school that matches your needs.
I also researched Tarheel a while back considering an Internship for a year after reading Jerry Bradshaws Articles and his book ' 'Controlled Aggression' . I haven't gone ahead and taken it further yet other than a few emails as i live in the UK and having worked in the US for 2 years already it may be difficult for me to get another visa. From the people i know who have dealt with them they seem quite proffessional and have a lot to do with police dogs and training their handlers producing some good 'real world' working dogs . I'd love to go there and see for myself before i commited though like i would with any place i was considering learning with.
Thank you everyone for your input, and thank you Cindy for suggesting Michael Ellis I am going to call for some info. I have worked at a kennel for the past 4 years, and have learned alot from my boss, working with the in-kennel dogs, helping out in the training classes everyweek, and having the opportunity to work some of his shepherds. Gottfried Dildei has also come on a few occasions to teach with the Schutzhund club that we have there and it had made a huge impact on my love for training working dogs. I mostly want to get involved in training Police Dogs, personal protection dogs and Schutzhund which I have learned a ton working with the club.
just going to say 'michael ellis' too - i spent 2 weeks there as student in october for the protection/decoy clinic (i flew from china..). he basically tells you everything you might possibly want to know about dogs - and it's super interesting to meet someone who's experienced so many different methods and can explain it all in so much detail.
