How many of us have tried to make something into something it wasn't. Usually because of a lack of drive rather than an overabundance. Great story. Whenever I have spent several months to over a year of training a promising pup as a guide or service dog which develops a problem (wether behavioral or more often health related); it is so easy to feel like I failed.
