I don't know who was more confused last night me or Luna my
22 month old gs. The weather was awful with heavy rain, wind
little lightning and hardley any thunder. We remained under
a tornado watch until late. We live in the South, this was nothing unusual. Luna has been in many a thunder storm with
severe lihtning and thunder and always had an attitude of
"Mother nature can't scare me" that is until last night. She
paced the floors, panted and wined, tried to hide behind the
couch (not allowed)etc. I did all I could to ignore the behavior
and made sure I did not pet or console her. I remained calm. I was dumbfounded by the complete attitude change regarding storms. I eventually (after 5 hours of this) put her in her kennel (my porch) she got into her igloo and went to sleep. Do
you guys think this was a fluke? or am I in for it again the
next time a storm rumbles in.
Hey Lynnne: Thats a great point. Never crossed my mind. She
sometimes has ear issues but not lately I keep a close eye on her
ears making sure they are clean. She has never acted so unglued
before in a storm. Has me puzzled, but maybe the pressure of the
storm was a factor, she also kept looking out the window as if
a monster was about to pounce through, my husband was convinced
she new something we didn't and maybe tornadoes would be an issue. However the temps were really not warm enough for tornadoes, if they were I would have been the first one in the
tornado shelter
That would have been my guess, also, Lynn, since they sense things even when we don't. My horse always acts 'weird' like he's seeing ghosts when a storm is approaching, but way way far away. I think they have some sense of the distrubance of the magnetic fields & bar. pressure. Cats also sence a storm way off.
I just ran into a man last weekend that was telling me that his GSD (german showline) has fairly recently (now 6yr old) formed a 'fear' of the sound of high wind. Dog totally freaked out & tore apart the curtains, & front window of the house with bite markes on the side of the windows over 7 ft high. He said that the dog had never reacted like this until about 6 months ago. No problem with thunder or lightening, just the sound of high wind. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Just curious. I have never had this kind of issue so I had no suggestions for him other then for him to crate the dog during storms with high wind.
Anne: The sound of high wind may just be what set her off. I
also just thought that would it be possible for her to be aware
of the fact that the storm dumped enought rain for the creek
next to our property to overflow flooding the pasture, road to
house washed away! Could she have heard the water rushing and
became overly concerned and thats why she kept looking out the
window. Has be bumfuzzled!
Betty, I don't know. Obviously something was bothering your dog. She may have heard the water & couldn't figure out what the odd noise was & it upset her not being able to figure it out. Who knows what they are thinking, sometimes.
My dogs don't even bat an eye during storms, so I have not ever had to deal with it. Anything is possible. I just thought that it was odd that this guy's dog had no issues about this for 5 1/2 years & then freaked out like he did.
