I have a 12 week old male GSD puppy that is not a good eater. He came from Germany 2-1/2 weeks ago and was doing good at the breeders, but now that he is home with us his is not eating very well. We have had him to the vet and they can not find anything wrong with him. He did have a upset tummy for a few days and the vet gave him some meds to help with that. I have a 11 month old female GSD that was a very good eater until we brought him home and now we are struggling with both of them.
We have tryed them both on raw, they will eat for morning feeding and evening feeding and than will not touch it again.
We started him with the puppy food that the breeder gave us (basicly junk). We wanted to get him off that as soon as possible. He would not eat that, we tried natures varity chicken raw. He ate it the first two times than would not touch it again. We feed him 6 oz. each feeding.
We have tried just about everything. We know that switching his food can cause some problems so now we are back to what the breeder gave us. He will eat a little, but nothing like what he should be eating at this age.
Kathy, that's not normal. Normal is formed logs. Perhaps he still has some stomach/intestinal issues that are affecting his appetite. What medication did the vet prescribe for his stomach issues, and is he still taking it?
It sounds like another stool sample should go to the vet to see what's going on there...
For now, you might want to consider a very bland diet of over-cooked white rice and boiled chicken breast. Maybe a teaspoon of plain yogurt added to get some good bacteria in his gut. If there is any question of him being dehydrated you could add some homemade chicken broth to his drinking water (unsalted, of course)
This is a temporary diet to get his tummy feeling better, not a long-term thing...
