Hello, All,
Has anyone heard of or used a product call Grandma Lucy's Artisan pet foods?
It's a little on the expensive side. I think RMB would be a lot less exspensive.

Hi, Tony,
Is your question more about the cost difference between raw and kibble? The nutritional differences between raw and kibble? Or whether that particular commercial food has a good ingredients list?
Welcome to the board.

We carry a few Grandma Lucy's products at Petco but not the foods. However, from what I know about it, its pretty good stuff as far as dog food goes. Its grain free, which is a big plus in my book. It seems to be close to The Honest Kitchen quality, but maybe not quite there. And yes, the higher quality you go, the more expensive it gets.
I agree, raw would be cheaper if you are a good bargain shopper.

Sorry for being so vague. I'm very busy and doing this on the fly as it were.
I was looking at this one as well as Royal Canin GSD 24. Of course all of the questions you purposed should be answered but I was thinking about the ingredients.
I have been comparing RMB to kibble in terms of cost.
Thank you.

If you're comparing costs it's best to go with something of similar quality. Royal canin although I know a fair number of people who use it is not of the same grade as raw or many of the higher end foods like Wellness Core, Evo, Instinct, or Blue Wilderness. Royal Canin is comparatively expensive to it's ingredient base usually matching what we refer to in the trade as premium blends, along with Science Diet.

Yikes. Stay away from the Royal Canin. A couple months ago one of the Royal Canin reps gave me a box of samples because he knew I had a GSD. I have a sample sitting in front of me and for what the stuff costs, its crap. At my store, it is $59.99 for a 30 lb. bag. That's as much (if not more) as Wellness, Solid Gold, Halo, and Natural Balance.
Here are the first 8 ingredients in it: Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Rice, Chicken Fat, oatmeal, soy protein isolate, natural chicken flavor, powdered cellulose, dried beet pulp (sugar removed)....
The only thing in there worth paying for is the chicken meal. So if you are looking for the best value in money spent, Royal Canin is NOT the way to go. You are paying for a bag of tasty fillers with a little chicken in it.
Another thing I would suggest doing is looking at the recommended serving sizes of the foods you are comparing. Break it down into cost PER DAY to feed your dog. Do the math on raw- figure out your portion sizes and then estimate daily cost. Then do the same for the kibbles/dehydrated foods you are considering. Also look at the ingredients in the foods you are considering and see what your money is going to. As far as Royal Canin goes, you are paying a LOT of money for RICE. Whereas, with Honest Kitchen and Grandma Lucy's, you are paying a lot of money for CHICKEN. That's money better spent in my eyes.

Grandma Lucy's is selling for $60 for a 10 pund bag of the chicken flavor here locally (Central Florida) which is much higher than RMB.
What are you guys spending per pound on RMB? I have shopped it some but I must not be a bargain shopper. lol

Bought in bulk, many raw feeders can buy food for $1 per pound or less--assuming a diet based on poultry parts for RMB. That's the arbitrary price goal I set for myself.

I'm currently sourcing my chicken backs through a butcher that charges $.69/lb - chicken livers are $.79/lb. I typically buy between 20 and 40lbs at a time, though the price is not contingent on the amount purchased (I'd love to buy more bulk, but I'm limited by freezer capacity). I have yet to get muscle meat (or organ meat from other protein sources) at such a good price, but I haven't been that diligent about scouring the markets, and all together I don't feel like I spend an exorbitant amount... I also like knowing where the meat comes from, and try for as local as possible ( not to be confused with organic, which can be quite a bit more $$).
