My wife Ashley and I saw a young dog laying in the ditch this afternoon on our way to eat lunch. The dog looked OK for a stray and really didn't look distressed, so we left her alone and decided to check on her after while. She was close to a gas station that leaves food out for strays and we kinda figured she was just waiting on that. Didn't want to spook her into to roadway.
Couple hours later when we made it back she had moved very little. This time she tired to leave when we approached and was obviously injured on her hind legs. Possibly back.
She really can't walk at all with her back legs, though she does have some voluntary movement in them.
Long story short, she is on a comfy bed in our warm laundry room.
Ashley is calling her Tina because all the way home she was trying to get her to eat some of the leftover ham from lunch. If you've seen Napoleon Dynamite you know the line, "Eat your ham, Tina!". Hence the name.
I'll get her to the vet first thing in the morning. I chose against the e-vet for financial reasons. Sad, I know. She isn't distress, and I figure this is better than leaving her out in the same condition in 15 degree temps.
If all goes good she will probably have at least a long term foster home with us.
I've had to leave so many dogs behind because circumstance just didn't allow us to give as much as we wanted to.
This time we were able to help.
If she gets to stay, great. She seems to be a real sweetheart of a dog. If she has an opportunity to have another home then maybe I'll be able to help out the next one I see.
