Some of you may remember that last December we began building a chicken coop... At first I was going to name it the "Coop des Gras" because of its size and it took so long to build. However, it stuck me yesterday that the name should be "The Alaskan Cruise" because I probably could have taken one if we didn't begin this project....
In any case, since last spring I've incubated and hatched a total of 29 chicks, have purchased 6 day-old pullets, culled 8 roosters (not fun but I'm proud of myself for being able to humanely do so), and currently have 28 chickens including one little guy hatched by a broody hen on Dec. 16th. (Another roo... he won't be around long). We have six roosters which will be culled soon, leaving us with two roosters and twenty hens. Out of my twenty hens, I am currently collecting 14.6 eggs a day! (Dennis... want some free eggs??) Falcon is the sole recipient of the first eight birds culled... they were too small for us but perfect for him! (Lesson learned... fatten them up a bit longer!)

This is awesome!
Once again, your little farm has me green with envy.
Regarding the name of the coop. When my wife was still in school and living at home, Domino got terribly sick. Cost a LOT of money to save her.
She got nicknamed "The Couch" because that is the fund that got tapped into to pay for it all.

Tell ya' what Michael... when the weather is warm enough I'll send you some farm fresh eggs. You can decide if you and the misses enjoy them or they go to the dog... (Falcon loves waiting outside the coop for a nice, WARM, fresh from the hen orb of protein!)

Hmmm...thats a thought. I've watched a video on youtube on that very subject...tiny little buggers, to say the least. Perhaps I should try that before my sight gets any worse... I'll give you a buzz in a day or so and we can meet half way and do the "egg drop".

somebody gave me a six pack of Bud Lite, I'd rather drink donkey pee, we'll trade.
They just opened up the new USPS plant, 900 employees, I'm sure they'd love fresh chicken and eggs, maybe you can make enough money for that cruise

Hi Barbara!
I'm green over your egg supply!
I am totally ignorant of bird stuff, tho I do know that it's very difficult to sex birds (e.g., parrots), and I've read that to be sure, one must take the bird to a qualified vet to get the bird sexed.
My question to you is how can you tell if it's a hen or a rooster? I assume when they're hatched, they all look the same? So, do you have to wait a while and see what their feathers look like or something like that?

hehe I've seen that episode of dirty jobs.

I doubt it's done this way at Barbaras. ;-) We used to wait for them to crow when we were kids. 3 crows and they were designated to the dinner pen.
I'm jealous I admit of the fresh eggs. We are sadly zoned rabbit and poultry free here by the homeowners association. I've always toyed of getting an ostrich but haven't had the guts to do it yet.
