My buddy is looking for a GSD or Mal in the Minnesota area. He's had GSD's before and knows what's involved. He lives in the country and wants a basic companion dog, if the dog had protection training, he would be fine with that as one of his previous dogs was trained.
I know about petfinder, does anyone else have any recommendations that I may not have thought of?
The German Shepherd Pedigree Database has alot of listings of Dogs for sale. Im sure some posters on this site will be able to steer you in a better direction though. My only advice is to have him do his research and check references with any breeder he contacts.
Look at the sheer number of ads. I don't think it's any worse than any other site that doesn't require real names and has so many thousands of members and spans all around the world.
I would not send someone there who is new though. Too scary. If you know what you're looking for and who to avoid, it's not so bad. But no, I would not send someone who doesn't have enough experience to even know where to look for a dog. I shudder to think what he'd come home with.
There are good, bad, and just plain ugly people on that site. The trouble is telling the difference.
Will, you obviouslly have much more knowledge of that site then me, however, I have had a positive experiance with finding a breeder of that site. I contacted the breeder who supplied references(K9 Handlers), answered all my many questions, and allowed me to visit and observe all her dogs and their kennels. I have seen posts from that site which warn of negative dealings with breeders and scammers also. In my opinion the site can be used to find responsiable breeders if you make sure to do your homework.
