The 7-year-old German shepherd shows no signs of being injured, just one day after being stabbed by a shoplifter.
"It was a strange set of circumstances yesterday," said Kitts.
Officer Kitts responded to the call of a man dressed in women's clothing stealing undergarments, lingerie and watches from the South Hill Wal-Mart on Monday morning.
After running away and stabbing a store manager, the suspect took off again.
"Through the complex and over another fence and into a wooded area where Daro located the suspect," said Kitts. "I can see the suspect had his hands on Daro and was trying to push him off."
Daro had knocked the pocket knife out of the shoplifter's hands, but not before the suspect used it on him.
"I looked down and saw his leg was just covered in blood. I didn't know anything had happened until I could see a very large wound in his leg," said Kitts.
For officer Kitts, Daro isn't just a partner, he's family. And now, he's a hero.
"That guy would have had no qualms about sticking that knife in me," said Kitts. "I feel very fortunate. He's a hero. He's my hero and most of the guys in this department feel the same way."
This is the first injury that daro's received after six years on the job.
As soon as he fully recovers, he'll be back on duty. And his handler says if all goes well, he'll have about 2 more years left, before he'll be forced to retire.
