My 10-wk beagle/? mix, who is recuperating from last week's unknown allergy/skin condition, will only eat shite food (Science Diet).
I've been trying to gradually migrate him onto Orijen red (i.e., red meat mixed proteins). He'll pick out the shite but leave the Orijen. This am, tried giving him all Orijen @ breakie, when he's the most hungry. My thoughts was I'd give him a shite lunch & supper & migrate him that way. After 30 min of his whining & looking at his bowl, he went back to his crate. I switched to the fortified shite (supplemental kefir & fish oil) & he gobbled it all up.
One proposed cause of the skin condition was food allergy - Could pup intuitively avoid Orijen because he knows he's allergic? NOTE: The irritation existed prior to any Orijen being offered.
Try mixing in a little pumpkin, straight from the can (plain-not pie mix, if you can't find it I think we all decided that canned squash would work as well). Just mix the portions of both kibble into a jumble with it. My dog loves pumpkin, and it's good for them.
I look at it like, if you had been given fast food for your life up until now, then someone put a plate of fresh veggies and fruits in front of you, how open would you be to eating it.
If this were me, and I have had to do this, I would wait him out. Put the orijen down, leave it for 10 minutes. If he doesn't eat it, pick it up and try again next feeding time. He will not starve himself. When he is hungry enough he will eat it.
I had to go 4 days with an adult dog when switching to high grade kibble, I almost caved because I didn't want him to go any longer, but on the night of the 4th day, he ate. And I have never had a problem since. (Always make sure he is drinking though!)
Yes, the Orijen was prepared same as the SD shite. I'm reticent to add pumpkin, as I suspect the addition of the fish oil & kefir has resulted in his very soft stools - still formed, but very, very soft. He's only had it for three feeds. I'll wait til his stools are normal (and he's stopped scratching entirely - see thread called "How to ID puppy's allergy)
And, I'm almost out of the shite - so once it's gone, it's gone.
