My friend has a 5 month old GSD/Mal pup that he is trying to rehome. This female came from a bad situation; her dam was bred to a Mal and when the owner couldn't find a home for all the pups he decided he was going to sell them at Walmart. My friend ended up taking four pups and the dam (who had been chained to a tree), and he was able to adopt them all out, except for this one female who he would test out in sport training. As she has grown he has come to the conclusion that she isn't going to make the cut, but is a nice little dog none the less.
She is VERY energetic, is started on basic obedience, and enjoys swimming. She loves to use her nose; my friend can throw her toys in tall grass and instead of using her eyes, she sticks her nose to the ground and sniffs it out without getting bored or giving up. She picks anything up, including metal pipes, keys, glass bottles, balls, aluminum, etc. She is soft toward people and would make an excellent pet for someone in an active home. Tracking and SAR work is something she also may excel at with proper training.
Hi Emily:
Maybe try the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in California? They'll take donated dogs with the aptitude for disaster SAR work. I think they like to take dogs older than this, but it wouldn't hurt to shoot them an email or give them a call: http://www.searchdogfoundation.org/98/html/index.html
