I have a 9 and a half month old GSD/malamute cross. He is about 75 lbs right now. I think he is at the phase where he needs corrections. Thus far I have used a clicker and food rewards with him. I am a 130 lbs female, and he is getting to be stronger than me. He is a pet. We do general obedience and shutzhund, and will probably do agility when he is a year old.
What is the best method to use for correction in my case? Prong, e-collar, something else? I am worried about giving him too harsh a correction and causing him to become timid or fearful of me or unsure of himself.

Advice is much appreciated.

I would rcommend and E Collar and the appropriat training for what you are trying to accomplish. Just a guess on my part but most the dogs that are good Sch candidates even at club level won't fold up or shut down with normal correction. Ed has a DVD for e collar training and there are some ecollar trainers that frequent this board.
I would speak with the trainer that is helping you do your SchH training. He knows the dog & should be able to advise you what would be appropriate corrections for this dog.
Thanks for the replies so far. It is for obedience corrections. No one is my schutzhund club uses e-collars. Some use prong, some use fursavers on the dead-link, and some use choke chains. I wanted to know from people who might have tried e-collars and could compare them with the older methods.
Dennis, how do you know what level is needed with your dog? I tried one on my dog and he didn't seem to respond at all to the stim, but when I tried the vibrate he got really spooked.

If the vibration spooks him and the stim doesn't get a reaction maybe it is too loose. Make sure the contact points are making contact even with the head up. bring his head up gently by the muzzle and slide the collar up under the chin and again make sure its tight enough. a e-collar that is too loose will not stim consistently or at all, and the contact points can then leave soars from moving around to much.
Depending on the collar you have you could try the Clinch-it collar they have here that can be adapted for some e-collars and are the best for getting a perfect fit that is not too tight or too loose. I wish my collars would work with them.
