I used to be really into long distance running. A few years back I go hit by a car and sustained a pretty bad injury to my foot and ankle. I have not been able to run ever since.
I would really like to try getting back into it this spring. I'm thinking about starting out doing slow. Just doing short intervals of jogging and walking for about a half an hour, three days a week and staying at that level for a while. It will probably be at least 6 months before I increase distance, and thats if my foot holds up.
My dog is going to be a year old in March. At that point would it healthy for her to participate? I'm thinking about jogging around the park so that I can have the smooth asphalt trail and she can have the grass.
She's going to be a big girl. She's already almost 70 pounds and not at all fat. I just want her joints to stay healthy. I already have a bum foot, I don't want to have a dog with a bad hip!

I do a lot of running with my GSD. IMHO, you shouldn't consider having a GSD do any long distance running until it's at least 18 months old. That said, you jogging will likely be little more than a trot for the dog and with mixing up the jogging with walking, maybe it will be fine for the dog as you ease her into it.
Always looking for training avenues close to home. Any suggestions? |

I agree with Eric. As a long-time runner myself, I know you'll be easing back into running shape. That will be perfect. When I "run" with Cali, I keep it to no more than 20-30 minutes, and I only do it on my easy days. I'm running my easy pace, and no way is SHE running--not even a cantor. I suppose you could call it a "trot." She loves it. Her ears are back, her tail is out, and she's traveling with her pack. She looks at me all happy and proud--it's great.
No way would I run interval workouts with her--probably ever. The EZ Stuff is nice and relaxed. I have The Buddy System waist leash system and I like it a lot. I use it with the prong collar for extra power steering, and she stays right in the heel position. At first she would almost take me out cutting in front, but that's MUCH better now. Although with this weather here, we haven't been out in at least 6 weeks!

Yeah, I doubt I will get much beyond 5 minutes of slow jogging at a time before she's 18 months. My foot is just not strong enough. It will probably be about another year before I can do a real run, if ever.
I just miss it so much! My favorite thing in the whole world was to go out for a ten mile run on a sunday morning. I don't know if I could ever do that again, but I know my dog would love it if we could do my old weekday schedule together.
Just out of curiosity, what is the longest distance you cover when your dog is with you?

Well, I don't run, but I bike my dogs regularly.
My adult can go an easy 7 and up to 10 miles straight, and he is a Rott. My pup gets to run at his pace, and we walk when he shows ANY signs of being tired or less than interested; typically around 3/4 mile on a warm day, and 1 1/4 on a cool evening, tops. He is 14 months.
I will make it a goal to run a 10K by the end of the summer...

Thats a long way for a rottie! Quite athletic guys you have.
If you put your mind to it you can definitely do a 10k by then. I found that if you are healthy, once you can do 3 miles you can increase distance almost indefinitely. And after a certain point the long ones are almost easier than the short ones.
You'll know you have the bug when you find that you don't even want to bother lacing up your shoes to go less than 5 miles.
Plus, you have some pretty macho running buddies to impress!

As a devoted trail runner, hiker and skier I bring my dogs on all outdoor pursuits. My shepherd has covered 35 miles in a day with more than 7,000 ft elevation gain/loss on a mountain hike in NH, and this winter ran 16 miles while I was skijoring my husky, running up to 19 miles/hr. I expected this from my AK husky, but I was watching my shepherd run to make sure she was handling it OK, and she just settled into a 'lope' and kept at it, with a big smile on her face! I'm also a runner, and run both dogs off leash for 9 miles in the morning, then another 3-4 at night on-leash. My shepherd is healthy, happy, and energetic, and I think is about 3 years old. I hope you can get back into it with your dog. It's such a great way to bond and dogs are the best running parters you could ask for! Hopefully you'll be able to build back into your old mileage just when your dog is old enough to handle it too. Happy Trails!

My GSD is about the same age as yours and my husband takes her out on 20 to 30 minute "trots" at her pace much like Linda describes. (I personally walk her 2 miles per day as well). He is a trail runner and is itching to take her further, but I am having him hold off till she is a bit older, for now he brings her home and then goes on his real run. I think this level of activity is healthy for her at 10 months.
Our last GSD used to go on 20 mile trail runs, or up and down back country peaks skiing. But this was when she was older. They never get enough!
