Should I continue to charge the marker "yes" in different environments (diff rooms, outside, etc.) before moving on to a targeting?
Do I say "break" after each "yes" or at the end of the 5 minute training session?

Can you link this to whatever post preceded it? The "break" after every "yes" is confusing me.
Is the dog looking for (obviously expecting) the treat when you say "yes!"?
P.S. No need to start a new thread when it's actually part of an old one; it just makes the reader look up your previous posts to find out where we are and what has been said.

Hi Connie,
I just reread the two threads, and am glad to see that I didn't miss any mention of when to say "Break" - it's the 5th of the five key words of marker training.
I've been saying it at the end of the entire trg session, just as I only say "ready" at the beginning of each session. I now wonder if I'm to say ready and break after each effort.

Oh, I getcha. I forgot "break." I use "done."
It's the end of the session, just like "ready?" is the beginning.
No, it's not after every "yes."
Do you have a way to make a video clip?

I think this is right, Bev. Do you feel that you have successfully charged the mark?
(I say 'That's it!'instead of 'break!')

I think he's on his way. Is there a test to know for sure "Yes" has been charged? He continues to look at my hands, which are often behind my back. I hold the piece in front of the bridge of my nose when I say yes. This way, he often looks at me.
I also wonder if I need to do it in other rooms (right now, his world is my 9x6 kitchen & a small portion of my 11 x 8 art studio) before moving to a command.
I ordered the DVD "Trg with markers" on the weekend, so hopefully it will come soon.

I don't display the food in the charging scenario. It's displayed only when it's deliberately being used as a lure. It's true that the between-eyes thing can be a shortcut to "look at me," but you are really kind of over-thinking (and complicating) a very simple charging step.
Yes.
Give food.
Yes.
Give food.
Does the dog now look for the food when you say yes? Mission accomplished.
Also, this:
"He continues to look at my hands, which are often behind my back. I hold the piece in front of the bridge of my nose when I say yes."
is confusing me.

Bev, remember that when you are loading the marker, you are not expecting any behavior. Just 'yes!" and give him the treat. repeat,repeat,repeat...
If you are holding the treat at the bridge of your nose and waiting for him to look at you, that is not the same as loading the marker. Nothing wrong w/ that for teaching 'watch me!', but when you do that you are expecting a behavior from him. (to look at your face)
The way you know you have loaded the marker is to say 'yes!' when hes's not looking, and he should turn around and look at you in expectation of the treat.
ETA, whoops, posted the same time as Connie...

Gotcha - tx for the clarification. Do I need to do the "yes-give food" exercise in different locals before I move on to the next step? Or, is it better to charge the marker, then reward for an observed behaviour in one local?
