Hi, I have a 5-year-old German Shepherd, and he loves to play with the Egge. He's been playing with it for about a year now, and I have started to notice that his wrists have a lump on the inner part of the wrist on both front legs. He has no pain when I play with it, and his range of motion is fine. No limping at all either. It is starting to look rather unattractive, and I was wondering if the Egge is causing some sort of callus? It isn't raw or scabbed or anything like that, just a swollen lump. I have taken the Egge away for now, but I just don't want this to be a permanent thing. I also don't want him to get arthritis or something from it. Any thoughts? Thanks!
No, he has his dew claws. It is right at the wrist, higher than the dew claws, right where the wrist bends. He uses that part of his legs to help "grab" the egge when he plays with it, and runs around the yard playing soccer in a sense with his front legs. I think the constant banging on his legs is causing damage.
Do not purchase the EGGE. I just got confirmation from my vet that the EGGE has caused my dog Tenosynovitis of the carpal region. This is from repetitive "soccer-like" play with the Egge, and if I had known this would cause this, I would have never purchased it! My vet has never seen something quite like this, so it is rare, but if you do decide to purchase the Egge, I would suggest not letting your dog play with it for long periods of time. My dog loves it, which makes it sad because I don't think he will be allowed to ever play with it again for fear of causing inflammation again and possible permanent damage.
As with anything, too much is never good. I'd hate to say DON'T BUY THE EGGE because one dog with a "happy obsession" developed a rare condition as a result. Hopefully you will be able to find something else which you can let him play with for short periods of time. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery! Good point that we all need to monitor the toys are dogs play with and for how long.
To Lynne Barrows, he played with it about 20 minutes a day...not excessive in my opinion. Connie Sutherland, here is a link to a picture of his legs...http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LdQ18EJisgNI0iHrfA6vpA?feat=directlink
I apologize for saying "Don't purchase this.." I was just very upset that this happened, as I never thought it could cause this damage. I don't think he plays with it excessively either. But, the hard plastic does cause trauma to the sensitive tissue, I guess that is only logical.
