Hi everybody, my E-collar has been very unreliable and I'm wondering weather it is my location (i live on the edge of a big city), and other factors or if this a bad or defective product. It sometimes gets a reasonable distance it will work from 100 feet too the end of my back yard if i stick my hand in the air. Other times I continually press the pager button and walk toward them when I'm thinking its not working and often times it won't work till I'm within 10 feet before i hear the beep.
The Collar is a Innotek UltraSmart Micro Remote Trainer and i have also used the Petsafe Big dog comfort trainer and have the problem with both. I've read lots of good things about the Dogtra collars, and the collar I'm thinking of buying is Ed's favorite Dogtra 280NCP Platinum.If my problem is due to external factors and I'd likely have the same problems with other collars as well then it wouldn't make much sense. If anybody knows if there is a big difference in range and effectiveness with these collars. it would really help.

throw the innotek in the trash and get the Dogtra
I have a Dogtra 280NCP Platinum, which I am using for the pager on a dog who is losing his hearing, and I think it's great. Obviously, that's not much to go by, but I've seen so many posts here from folks having problems with other brands (but not with Dogtra) that I have to conclude that Dogtra is the way to go.
http://leerburg.com/280ncp.htm This thing has made it unscathed through the buckets of steady downpour we have had for weeks here, not to mention a few falls from my hand to the concrete. It seems to be indestructible.

yeah I'm sold. I think I'll get the cinch it collar thing as well. I can't wait the 280NCP looks so much better than mine. if only i was smart enough to check here before buying one the first time. oh well live and learn.
Hi Robert;
I make it a point to be very familiar with all the collars on the market and I prefer the Dogtra models over all others.
The sensation that the Dogtra gives is a rather pleasant one, similiar to a tens unit used by a chiropractor. I am confident that the collar will work in any environment. The range is affected by terrain, so you will have to experiement with that. I suggest placing the collar in your hand, up where you fingers begin and test the collar in many locations. I think that will allay your fears. Take care,and Happy Training,
Roni
I have a Dogtra 1702NCP.(2 dog collars/1 controller) I have had it for 4 1/2 years. It has been to the beach more times than I can count(with the dogs putting their heads underwater) out in the pouring rain, the deep, deep snow, been dropped numerous times, recharged 100s of times & still works fine. I would definatley recommend a Dogtra collar. They're the TIMEX of the e-collars!

I just put the order in with a few of books and other things that i needed.
Roni thanks, I'll definitely try it a few places, I can let my girlfriend stim me to test distance I'm sure she'll get a kick out of it. As well it's good to know the stim is less jarring, my rotty is really sensitive to the e-collar, and if there is a more gentle stim or even the vibration setting on this one might get a better reaction.
Anne it's good to hear it's durable, I think my last collar stopped working so great after it got wet and knowing my dogs and i the next one will get wet too.
Thanks again for the input everybody, I'm looking forward to a having a reliable collar.
Connie, I use the 282Ncp, two dog collar. I walk and play with both my adult, high drive dogs. Really great collar.
Robert, you are welcome and let me know training goes.

If anybody sees this thread that is thinking of making the same switch that i did or just thinking about a Dogtra collar.
I realized that not only is it a better collar, but it also has rechargeable collar and remote. both the collars that i owned before ordering the Dogtra required batteries for either the remote or collar that were expensive (10 bucks), few stores carried them and they didn't last very long. i figured i would go through 22ish batteries in about 2 years or less and that would cost as much as a new collar that is by popular opinion better in every way and again fully rechargeable. JMO, take care, and thanks again forum.
