Hi everyone i have a friend with a Shepard x lab, and he's having trouble with the dog leaping the barrier into from the kitchen onto the nice white carpet after being outside. what are some possible solutions for this particular problem?
i told him that basic ob, proper pack ground work, and lots of exercise would be a start. i was thinking an e collar but I'm not sure how one would implement it. is this a pack behavior situation so should he be correcting just for the action? or is there a better way to deal with this problem.
He is visiting from Portland, Oregon and i was wondering if there is a reputable dog trainer there that somebody could suggest. If so PM me with the info.
Take care and thanks for any help
Rob

First off is this an area where the dog is consistently not allowed all the time? If the answer is no you're wasting your time trying to correct this because dogs understand consistency, not wiping their feet before jumping on the sofa.
A baby gate is not a confinement device for a large dog unless that dog is exceptionally tolerant of visual barriers. A crate would be much much better.
Finally, Really... white carpet and a dog? I'm no interior design expert but it sounds like this house isn't set up to be dog friendly.

Melissa thanks,
yeah i would tend to agree about the carpet even without the dog LOL. I'm pretty sure that it's a no dog zone though i will ask him tomorrow.
I guess I'm spoiled with my dogs if I block the door with my baby gate or even i chair my dogs respect it, and they could clear it with ease but they don't and i confine or restrict them from places they are normally allowed to go to. but like you said they respect a visual barrier that i have established, i thought maybe this was because of my OB and pack structure work, but i could be wrong.
thanks,
Rob

We have a permanent kid gate at the top of our stairs to prevent the little nieces and nephews from tumbling to their deaths. My little dogs fit under it, my lab with all her grace of a fine spooked cow just barges through it. The cocker spaniel is the only one who will wait patiently at the gate.
If it is a dog free zone my suggestion would be to drop the babygate or use it along with indoor invisible fencing. It's more of a mental barrier which is far more effective than a dog who has figured out that physical ones can be bypassed if you just try hard enough. Above all it's consistent and eliminates the self rewarding behavior.
Also a dog who comes inside, is tethered with people, and otherwise in a crate will never sully the carpet.

Pretty much my first words on the subject with him exactly. I also mentioned the indoor electric pet barriers were an option possibly in conjunction with the baby gate to reinforce it as a rule.

screw all that, rip up the carpet, put some cheap stuff down, if you got the money, tile the floor and be happy

Ah, the "nice things" you give up when you have a dog...
glass doors without nose prints
wood floors without foot prints
black pants without dog fur
Wouldn't change anything!! Except the white carpet.

I keep putting off and putting off really cleaning our floors because we keep having rain, snow, rain, snow, etc... I decided today was the day regardless; they simply need cleaning. HOWEVER, we just came back from a long romp through the woods admiring how beautiful everything is during a snowfall, and I have once again, convinced myself to wait. (Not a hard decision for me... when Adam was little he used to ask "whose coming over?" when I'd break out the vacuum!!)

Who'd want to give those up. I was dogless for several years and really missed the dog art on the windows and the blowing wall-to-wall "carpeting." Actually, since I don't have a Collie or GSD right now I still kind of miss that "carpet." But, I do have the dog hairs on the clothing again. *Happy sigh*

I've got a baby gate jumper too (and white carpet too, interestingly). It's a combo all that agility training I've done and the fact that she has a spring in her butt. She honestly just thinks it is great fun to jump over it, going either in or out of the room depending on her mood. She will stay in there if I give her the command "wait" and if it were a real problem for me, I'd invest in a taller gate or some other type of barrier (half-door?).
