Anyone on here have any experience with dogs contracting pink eye? My little girls eye lids are all swollen, and red and there is some discharge. We thought it originally an allergic reaction because she got some yogurt, and she's pretty reactive to milk products. However, after a few days of rinsing and bathing the eyes and benadryl, there's been only a slight improvement so she's going in to the vet tonight for a check. Was wondering if there is anything non-antibiotic, or drops that I can look into?
We'll see what the vet says anyway (because it may not be pink eye), just trying to get a heads up before we go in. She's never had an eye infection before.
Thanks
Well, this is a folk remedy for eye problems (not to be used in place of the vet's visit, however. )
Steep a tea bag in hot water to make a light-colored tea. Let cool down to just barely warm and soak a cotton ball in it and rinse the dog's eye with it. The tannic acid can help with soothing the eye and possibly knocking back the bacteria.
I've used it on dogs and cats (and my kid) and had good success if it was not a full-blown infection. (like 3x per day)
Thanks for the suggestion Lynn.
I tried the tea bag, but I think I did it all wrong, and succeeded only in staining around her eye, which she didn't seem to happy about. I like the cotton ball idea though, sounds like it works better than just using the bag.
We'll see what the vet says tonight.
Thanks again.
When you need some anti-biotic ointment, there is nothing like it. I would not hesitate to use some. Its just local, and can do wonders if warrented. If her eyes are itchy it will help a lot to make her more comfy.

You could rinse the eye with ordinary bottled saline solution (like you would use to rinse contact lenses).
You can also make a sterile eye wash by boiling water with a tiny bit of boric acid powder, then cooling that and applying to the eye with a clean cotton ball or cloth.
And you can buy terramycin opthalmic ointment without a prescription. It's a simple antibiotic ointment for dog and cat eyes. Google it to find lots of online vendors.
None of these home remedies are a substitute for a vet visit. But they are handy to have in the first aid kit.
