My Rotts chipped. My two Shepherds are tattoo'd in the ear. My first Rott was tattoo'd on his inner thigh. I put him up on a table on his back, held his head, and the lady tattoo'd his AKC number on him.
Considering the microchip with my pup, but I've been told it won't be of much use 'around here' because the vets, rabies control, or humane societies don't routinely check for them. Wouldn't help me find a lost dog, but I suppose could prove legal ownership if the need arises. Just debating what to do.

Well I'd be surprised if any humane societies or animal control don't check microchips, most of them get scanners for free after all and at least here most of them adopt out all animals with a chip implanted. I know my vet only checks when filling out offa paperwork and setting up an for a new client.
The nice thing about chips is that they are nearly impossible to remove or alter. The downside is that there isn't a way for a dog without other id identifying that there is a chip for a person to know that there is one. Buying a scanner for the home is pretty prohibitively expensive.

Hi, Paula,
My dogs are chipped.
The shelters in my county own and use universal scanners on incoming dogs.
I'd be pretty surprised if this county was all that unusual as far using a scanner goes. However, it's likely that not every shelter has a universal scanner and that it works perfectly.
Nevertheless, for me, there's no question about whether I'm doing it or not.
my pup is tattoo'd AND chipped. all the vets/shelters/humane societies in my tri-state area but one not only have scanners, but if someone shows up with a "new" dog, the dogs are scanned and basically not released to the "new" owner until ownership is verified.
i learned this the hard way when Brix disappeared, but was glad to; i think one of the reasons they do it is b/c this is BIG pheasant hunting country, and i imagine a fair # of high $$ dogs get "lost" every fall.
i have some fun telling my teenaged daughter's friend's that not only is Ike a GSD, but he has a tattoo as well
Nope none here regularly USE. All have. Go figure. Know for fact... worked at humane society and got the scanners for them, volunteer at the clinic on occasion. Know the "insides" of locals.
