We have had a GSD puppy for two weeks since he was 9 weeks old. We only lock him in the crate for a short period of time (1 hour) during morning and evening when we couldn't keep any eye on him. During the night and 8 hours during the day, we use the crate to block a small bathroom and keep the crate door open but facing inside so he could have a little more space to move arround. So far he hasn't had any accident inside his own space except a couple of times when I forgot to pick the water bowl 1.5 hours before I left to work. During the evening, we give him free access to water before 7:30pm and let him drink some water between 8:30 to 9 and we also take him out 4 to 5 times during evening before 11:30pm.
Does anyone has any comment about what we are doing with the crate or think we should keep him strictly in the crate during the night or the day time when he is home alone?
If I'm reading this correctly, the pup is confined to a bathroom for 8 hrs a day?? That doesn't seem reasonable to me, can you get someone to come in during the day and spend some time w/the pup? Otherwise, a good sized kennel run would be a much better alternative.
A 6 ft x 6 ft bathroom plus the crate. I'm also thinking about giving him additional space (a 3 ft x 3 ft hall way and the laundry room which is slightly bigger than the bathroom) and beside having more room to move arround, he would also have a wider view of our kitchen and family room and a closer look of the daily activities of our cat. We do spend more than 3 hours to play with him each day in the morning, late afternoon and evening. We thought about outside kennel and garage but decided to keep him inside because the inside is airconditioned and free of insects.
I don't see anything wrong with what you are doing, just make sure your puppy doesn't have access to any items that may hurt him, i.e. choke, hang himself on or drown. It's amazing what kind of trouble they can get themselves into if you give them a chance.
