Hi all,
I found a really good deal on whole stewing hens at my local No Frills, 40 cents a pound. Apparently they are older egg laying chickens and aren't as tender when you bake them. I'm certain the dogs could care less when they eat it raw. i bought 8 and it cost me around $16.
anybody use stewing hens?
I've heard to be careful about some turkey parts and I've never heard of anybody feeding these. i was curious if there are anything i missed or that i should be concerned about.
Jennifer is right... the meat is just a little tougher. Just in case you are wondering, if you decide to eat them, use a slow cooker. The slow cooker will tenderize them more than any other cooking method. 40 cents a pound is a deal!
Your dogs will be perfectly happy and if you cooked that ol' hen all day in a crock pot, so would you! I just slow cooked a few roosters we slaughtered recently and those ol' boys were yummmmmy. At .40 cents a pound, I'd fill up my freezer!

i bought all they had out. I'm gonna go back tomorrow and see if they have put any more out, I hadn't seen them there before so i hope this wasn't a one time thing.
I'll do up that slow cooker too If I run out of the people meat i bought.
