The past 2 days my dog has snubbed her food, eating only a turkey neck at each feeding. I feed her twice a day. She has great energy, just had a vet visit 2 weeks ago all looked great. She is not due for another heat cycle until June. I feed her raw and she used to go nuts at feeding time. She is 16 mos. I was wondering is this a phase? Or a self fast? I don't know, but looking to the panel of experts for some advice. Thanks

How much does she weigh?
How much are you feeding?
How long have you been feeding raw?
If any amount of time, is there decent variety?
Any particular food being snubbed, or is she an equal opportunity snubber?
Would you like me to ask you anymore questions?

Oh yeah more questions no problem. Lets see start from the top,
69lbs.
3% of 70lbs
been feeding raw for about 7 to 8 mos.
I feel a decent variety Pork, beef, chicken gizzards livers, beef liver, venison, tripe turkey necks, chicken backs and leg quarters.
Pretty much an equal opportunity snubber the past 4 feedings (which were all different) does not snub the turkey necks and tonight ate only the leg quarter.
more questions welcomed for sure.

She might just be going through a phase. As long as she's healthy I'd try fasting her completely (except water, of course) for 24 hours, and then see what happens.

Try to figure how much she IS eating, and see how that compares to the 2-3% guidelines.
Maybe she is one of those good self regulators.
I'd be curious how much she IS eating, though.

Good idea Michael, I thought I was pretty good about weighing everything before she ate, now I guess I have to do some math...
dang it. I will for sure let you know. Tomorrow I am going to try some mackerel, that was a once in a while meal but she loved it.

I have only been feeding raw for a few weeks, but I have noticed that my dog will eat really well for a few days and then have a day or two that she eats hardly anything.
I think she is probably just a good self regulator, as Michael pointed out. She used to do this with kibble as well, just not to the same extreme as with the raw diet.
It seems that adding a really exciting item to her meals will get her eating. For my dog it seems that oxtails, or other red meat items will get her appetite going. She likes sardines a lot, too.
Its funny, she has an order to eat her meals. First, she takes all the chicken out of the bowl. Then she eats what is easiest, moves on to whatever is her favorite and after everything else is gone she goes back for the chicken necks or backs.
Sometimes she doesn't get as far as the chicken. I figure its ok because she looks good.

Michael, this in in reply to the "how much IS she eating" question. This am I feed her 1 11.7oz chicken leg quarter and 6ozs. of groung beef. She ate the leg quarter did not touch the ground beef. This now 5 meals only the bone part of the meal. Since the ground meat or organ part of the meal has the salmon oil, vit e cap and a digetive enzyme I am worried a little now. Elaine had suggested a complete 24 hr. fast(only water) I have not been sure about fasting in the past but now I guess I will try anything. Do you think it is okay for her just to eat the "bone" part of the meal such as a turkey neck, leg quarter, chicken back ect.? And maybe this will end, Or should I just feed the organ/ground beef, tripe or pork part only until she gets really hungry? I am not really sure what to do. Thanks, all help is appreciated.

Well, 2% is 1.4 lbs. of food DAILY.
That leg 1/4 was only a few ounces shy of a pound.
See where I'm goin' with this.
If this amount of food is what you are doing everyday, then I'm inclined to think she is just self regulating. If you feed the same size meal in the PM, too, she is getting almost double what she should.
I would feed 2% of her weight daily, split into two meals and see how she does.
As far as her not getting the supplements for a few days, don't fret over it. Few days is nothing and won't do any harm whatsoever.
Do you HAVE to trick her to eat the E and salmon oil? If so, I'd give her that part first, and then give the rest of the meal. Maybe she'll go ahead and knock that out of the way to get to her precious RMB.

Thanks Michael, I might have been over feeding and that was her way of telling us so. I did not have to trick her for the sups. just mixed them in with the food and no problem. If I remember when this all started when I would put the food down and she was like hey where's the RMB. Prior to that she would eat the organs or what ever and then go for the "GOOD STUFF". I will go to 2% and see what happens. Thanks for your advice.
