So, Jynx usually isn't the mouthy type, unless she really wants to see a dog outside.
But overall, she's not a big barker, which is good since we live in an apartment, and well if she was, we'd be out on our butts.
But last night, I woke up three times from her barking at the door.
I looked into the hall, and didn't see anyone all three times.
When someone is out in our hall, she might bark once if they walk by the door, but not like she was last night, it was over and over, and over.
I can't have her barking in an apartment, we're getting out soon to a house but, any ideas ? or why she might be barking ?

I also live in an apartment. I had to start crating Tasha at night because of some guy, who I assume is training for the Boston Marathon, running up and down the hill in he middle of the night! She would go crazy barking out the window.
It definitely stopped it. Her crate is in the dining room, away from the doors and front windows.
I don't know if you are in the same situation, but I don't want her wearing a bark collar at night. I'm a single woman living alone in the city. The bark is part of the reason why I got her in the first place!

Oh no, I wasn't thinking of putting a bark collar on her.
More asking if crate, or having her sleep in my room, or giving her a bone at night might quiet her up.
I'm not sure if I want her in a crate, they're not as... scary to robbers if they're locked up. As well as being in my room all night.
There have been a couple of break ins, around here apparently.
So I'd like her to be able to bark or growl at the other end of the door, which she did... But last night she was going crazy.
Hopefully it was just last night.
Anyone know if a bone or toy might entertain her so she's not listening to the door all night?

By the time you woke up and got to the door whoever she was barking at could be gone.
First I would eliminate a possible security issue? If she is going to the door and barking and that is unusual behavior for her that would concern me.
Once I felt secure there I think maybe I would try bringing her in the bedroom, or even somewhere where a radio is playing softly.
It depends on the dog but with multiple dogs and sometimes several in runs I do use bark collars. Not one of my dogs would have a hard time barking through the collar if there is a threat. A low setting does seem to stop some of the nuisance barking that can drive neighbors nuts though.

If there has been a couple of break ins you may owe her a very big piece of steak about now.
If her barking continues and it is unusual behavior I would try and find out what she is barking at. Kinda hard is it's your normal sleep time though.
But is it's a more from boredom a bone or a kong with peanut butter could keep her busy. A radio playing softly can stop some of it also.
Does she bark at all when you are not at home?

I agree with Betty. We live "way out" and we have outside dogs to help deter problems. Typically they'll bark at a deer or squirrel, but just a minute or two, then they go back to sleep. One night just after midnight they started barking, and they would not shut up. I went to the door, pistol & phone in hand, and sure enough, I could see a flashlight in the woods across from my house. I heard someone yell, "you've got some good guard dogs there," and I yelled back, "that's why I have them, so I can get my pistol and call the sheriff's dept, who I have on the phone with me now." Flashlight went off.... then nothing. Sheriff's dept arrived in about 8 minutes, which is pretty quick for them. But 7 minutes too late if this guy had approached me.
So wait and see what happens the next few nights...

Was it just last night?
wait and see if she does it again tonight.
if it's the same time i would open the door and take a look in the hallway.
Could be someone working nights just getting home and making some noise that she's re-acting to.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

Nope, she doesn't bark when we're not home.
But she'll bark as soon as hears our voice coming down the hall, just mine or my boyfriend though.
I'm going to see if she does it again tonight, she hasn't barked at all today during the day.
Also, Paula that's a pretty scary story.
Good thing you had your dogs.
Also, if it was someone trying to break in, she'll get a nice big steak, I'll ask if anyone around had any problems last night.
Because the two people who got robbed are on either side of my house, so who knows, maybe she's scared off a robber before already.

I would certainly trust your dog. If she isn't a whack job like my BC who barks to hear the echo in her head....trust that she is hearing something.
When our Bullmastiffs were alive we had a mid summer weeklong period of time when they kept barking (from our two BMFS that alone was a big deal...they did NOT bark) at the front door. We would look, see nothing and tell them to knock it off. Then one night we were fast enough to see the bear leaving the circle of light cast by the porchlight. Hmmmm. Trust your dog.
