We just purchased a GSD from Bill Kulla and she is being shipped later this week to ATL. This is the first time we've had a dog shipped and are curious as to what we should expect? Where is the dog kept once it arrives? Is there a limit as to when you have to pick up the puppy? We do not anticipate any delays in getting to Atlanta but would like to know just in case there are traffic issues, etc. Needless to say, we're very nervous and anxious!
Thanks for any info!

Call the airport and ask them...you'll probably be picking her up in the cargo area. But, every airport will have their own requirements and directions...
I'd guess there is a limit to how long your puppy can be held, but you don't want your puppy to have to wait any longer than it has to. You just need to make sure you're there in plenty of time.
I had a puppy shipped from HI years ago, and it went just fine. Well, the only exception was that the guys in the cargo area decided to let her out of her crate when she arrived...could have killed them. She had a blast running around, tho.
Good luck with your new pup.

Usually the pup is picked up at cargo within one hour of the flight arriving. It's better if you are on the early side. When my puppy arrived her flight came in 30 minutes early, and I had the guy from cargo calling me immediately to see when I would be there.
She was a little stressed and barking her head off, driving him crazy. That in combination with Logan being the worlds most confusing airport there was a little more anxiety that day than here should have been.
Bring a leash and collar so you can let the pup out of the crate immediately, and a blanket or towel for the car ride home. If the pup is really young, or stressed, there is a good chance that there might be pee in he crate. Be prepared to give him a bath if you need to when you get home.
Congratulations! Good luck with your new pup

Our puppy came from Seattle to Salt Lake to Cinncinati to St. Paul on a frigid December day at 8 wks old and I was worried.
1)call the airline and Google the air cargo area, get directions. You don't usually pick up at the passenger terminal, and the air cargo place can be quite far away
2) bring paper towels and newspaper. If the puppy is young there will be poop and pee in the crate
3) after a little loving we put our guy back in the crate for the ride home ( 3 hrs )
He was crate broke from that day on!
Good luck and great excitement! I couldn't BELIEVE how cute my guy was, it was love at first sight. Happy puppyhood!

I am a volunteer for an organization that train dogs for service work ,so I have had many pups flown to me. When they arrive it takes about 30 minutes to reach the cargo area. The airline calls before they reach the cargo hold. I check the flights to make sure they are on time, and I make sure I am there when they reach the cargo area. I bring a leash, collar, towel, baby or pet wipes, and water, When I had my Parrots flown in, they were left at a counter "in" the airport, I had no problem finding that counter in a busy airport....they were sooo loud!
Enjoy your new pup!

Thanks for your quick responses. I've called the airport but have found that, depending on who picks up the phone, I get differing and conflicting information. Oddly enough, the most helpful person was a CSR in Jamaica.

Kelly,
I had a GSD puppy shipped from Florida to Atlanta last November.
She was in a crate for nine hours do to delays from weather. She
did fine. Continental was the airline and I pick her at the cargo
area which is nowhere near the terminal. Continental also told me
live animals are the first to get off the airplane. Howerver it did take about 30 min from the time they landed before I got her.

I have no experience with Atlanta. But, generally, I do know that you should be sure to find out the closing time for the cargo pick up area. If they are located in a remote area of the airport, they may close earlier than you might expect. And, if they do have an early closing time, ask about how to pick up live animals on flights that arrive after closing.

Our puppy came through Atlanta this last October, from Little Rock to Atlanta to New Hampshire. The little girl was only 7.5 pounds at 12 weeks old. She did fine. Delta did the transport. We met pup right at the ticket counter. They seem to have good systems in place to take care of the puppies. Get there early.

Nira came last Friday evening. In hindsight, our concerns and worries were unwarranted. Was very painless!
Anyways, introducing Nira Vom Geistwasser!
