I know nothing about the American Bulldog aside from Wikipedia articles. A co-worker wants to adopt one for her 10 year old little girl, who is a teeny tiny kid (who wants a Golden Retriever, I might add.) This would be the family's first dog, and they're asking me for advice.
Are they good family dogs? What's the temperament generally like? Size and strength worry me.
Thanks!

Personally, out of all the breeds I've met.
Both american bull dogs I've played with made me nervous.
And this isn't because the who bully breed, I love pits and rotties.
From what I've seen, and i'm sure this isn't with all of them...
But they'll push you out of the way to get something, say someone threw a stick, they'll plow through you.
Also, if you're playing with a toy, they're mouths get pretty close to your hand if you're playing tug.
I'm sure if it was trained it'd be okay, but just with a small child, I'd be more worried of them getting plowed over.
But with all large breed dogs, they might be a bit rowdy, and a kid might get pushed over or something.

Hmmm, sounds a bit like all of my dogs at one time or another.

Meredith, your co-worker should really be doing a lot of research herself before she brings ANY dog home to be a companion for her young daughter. Size and strength are certainly things to consider, but so is individual temperament (breed generalizations will only get you so far). Will this dog be adopted as an adult from a shelter? As a puppy from a breeder? - in either case, have they visited the dog? There are so many things other than breed to consider here...

I hate it when people say "I'm getting a dog for my kid..." That statement really bugs me. IMHO they can get what ever kind of dog they want... As long as they understand it's THEIR dog to care for and train. Entrusting a 10 yr old to take care of any dog is a ridiculous idea, let alone a dog that is prone to being large and in charge.

While some bulldogs can be great with kids (tolerant, loving) they are still a hearty breed who doesn't have much of what I call "boundary awareness". So unless you teach that from a young age they continue to think they are lap dogs and have little to no 'human manners' naturally. They're usually pretty clunky and are more than happy to sit their big butt right on you. And some do get quite large. 80-100+.. I wouldn't generally recommend such a heavy, hard headed breed to a family who isn't accustomed to it. Or that doesn't have much experience with dogs in general.

i have generally found bullies to tolerate kids fairly well, but, they are also rough and tumble dogs. i hate the way this will sound, but they aren't well, girly dogs. if you have older boys, or a tom-boyish girl who won't scream and cry when she gets knocked down by the dog, it's easier.
our AB's idea of a good time is to body check you, or to take a flying leap at your chest paws first.even with something as seemingly calm as a nice belly rub results in her smacking you in the face with her big old feet.
we personally don't mind this, as she will knock it off when told to,the kennel we got her from run OB classes, she was used as their demo dog for quite a while, but when she gets the zoomies, be prepared to be a human springboard.

I absolutely agree with Lisa. What happens to the dog when the girl is 13 and wants nothing more than to hang out with her friends and make eyes at boys? "We cannot take care of this dog so decided to put it to sleep" is way too common response. Or "my daughter brought her friends home and they started playing with the dog and one of the girls got bitten. This dog has forfeited any right to draw another breath".

Last week, we just had an American Bulldog kill a 3 year old girl in Marion County, FL. This was said to be a "show/breeding" male. She can look up the article online if she wants to. This is not to say AB's are bad dogs, but the potential is there. I personally have found them to be overly hyper goof balls who would lick you to death. Your friend needs to really read up on whatever breed she wants to bring into her home. An AB might be too much for a 13 year old, unless, she really puts in the time. Just my 1 1/2 cents.
