The Hydration topic sort of made me want to ask about this...
My dog has two auto waterers that are changed every other day (regardless if they're empty or not). He does share them with a cat (who has his own but thinks that "dog water" is better). I bring water with me on bike rides, scooter runs, in the car, on walks, out for frisbee, etc....
outside he eats snow...even when I offer him water he eats snow. I know eating snow doesn't really do much for hydration because of the energy spent melting it...Is he eating snow because he loves snow (which he does....all snow much be rolled in and thrown around or the world will end) or because he's thirsty and if he is thirsty why won't he drink the supplied water...does snow have the ability to "trick" him into thinking he's not thirsty?
Is there any reason I should stop him from eating snow? I've managed to stop him from bring "snow to go" into the house (he scoops it on his frisbee and carries it into the house to eat....then looks really confused when it melts and floods the kitchen) but stopping him from eating it could be tough since he'll do it while he's picking up his toy during a game or fetch or while he's going to the bathroom.
Next snow storm (which according to the little weather app I have here will be tommorrow -_-) I shall break out the camera...right now our remaining snow is that super nasty stuff I really don't want him doing anything with.
it's horrible though, he brings it right in and dumps it on the kitchen floor and will eat it....until it melts...then he'll sit there and stare at the puddle looking disappointed....
I don't know if it is a big deal for older dogs,(as mine scoop up a lot of it retrieving their balls when playing in the snow to no ill effects) but it is not good at all for puppies & can cause 'the runs' & dehydration which can be very serious & deadly.
The frisbee snow gathering must be only a "rare one legged flopbeast' thing !!! Ditto, on the video of this rare act. LOL.
