I'm only comfortable posting this on a dog training/workingline/a##kickingdog/ forum because I know Ed and Cindy have chickens...
My broody hen Champagne hatched one of out five eggs yesterday, and two more eggs have pipped and I can hear the little ones inside the eggs cheeping "GET ME OUTTA HERE!"
It is taking everything I have to not stake out the chicken coop in my jammies with a flashlight to see how things go!
There are not many things on earth sweeter than seeing a tiny chick poke her little head out from under of her momma's wing...
This is the second time this particular hen had gone broody, but only one egg hatched back in Dec. - a roo. He is no longer with us, but Falcon has very fond memories of him shared over a candle lit dinner..
This time I think she has five viable eggs, but time will tell.
I also have one more gal "Buttkuss", a rumpless, named because she never developed her tail feathers (!!!) sitting on 8, and they should hatch about a week from now. This is her first time being broody.
Our bantys always had large broods, but it seemed like dang near every time there was one with a leg deformity. One leg stayed straight, and would never tuck up in under them.
Good luck with this one. May they bring more food to the people's plates and dog's bowls.
how exciting!!!
i grew up with my grandparents-who raised acres of chickens(all game fowl), and when i was little(and, well, even when i was older, lol) i would get so excited to see the little chicks...momma hens did NOT appreciate me poking around. i was chased off more than once.
my grandpa had to go out and buy me my own bantams to leave his stock alone, lol. i had those birds spoiled, they were my first real pets(aside from scraggly yard cats). i remember those TINY little eggs, and little thumb sized chicks.
Four of the cutest, fuzziest, sweetest little chicks are happily tucked up under momma hen as we speak. Two little yellow guys, one speckled and one black - from a Barred Rock hen. I'll post pics tomorrow! Momma is such a sweet gal and very tolerant of my poking, prodding and picking up the chicks, although I do offer her lots of hand held treats... Hey! It is poultry marker training!! LOL! Caught one little guy poking his head out of the back of momma's wing earlier today... sooooo very cute!! One of life's simple pleasures...
