I asked this on another forum but didn't get any response, maybe you all can help.
My dog is 2.5 years old and has been left in the house alone for 14 hours at a time and never messed in the house...however.....when he's on leash he doesn't care if we're inside a building, working, joggin...whatever...he will just (without warning) drop his butt and poop whenever he feels like it. I have tried to think he was nervous in the situation and that's why he lost his wits inside the building and pooped. Last summer we were walking the ob course for a show and he did it right there on the field. While jogging alongside my golf cart tonight he almost jerked my arm out of my shoulder 3 times because he just put on the brakes and crapped in the middle of the road. I realize the movement will stimulate him but WTH? Sometimes during an ob class, I won't even know he did it, he'll just drop a little round poop ball and then at some point I see it on the floor. A week or so ago, I found one of these little poop balls in his bed!
Does this dog just not have control over his ass or is he being an ass? I don't know if this is just a quirk I need to deal with or if I need to get tough with him and punish him when he poops in these situations.

"But WTH" what?
Yes, you are moving him along and peristaltic action is stimulated by that.
You can start a simple log of his poop time (as it relates to his eating time) and get the info that allows you to either adjust eating time so poop time isn't a forced-indoor time or some other inconvenient time, or take him on a power-walk at that time.

My husband ran the Paris Marathon a few years ago. Thousands of people. Under the Arc de Triumph, or however you spell that, the big famous arch, he said there were hundreds of marathon participants taking a dump. People! In Paris! My husband said he did it TOO! I said, "WHAT?!"
Hunting dogs get out of their crates in the field and spend the first 10 minutes wildly running about and pooping.
Maybe you just have to carry some bags and try not to worry about it.

When I take my dog out on the bike I let him poop first then have two planned stops, one about 3 minutes after we start, another 2 minutes after that...why? He will throw me off the bike he ALWAYS stops dead and poops. It doesn't matter if he goes before we start, if he hasn't eaten anything, doesn't matter
It drives me CRAZY.....
perhaps your dog is doing the same thing? Not sure how to fix it but I'll be keeping an eye on this thread because it drives me crazy too!

Thanks for the replies. Of all the places he suddenly goes, jogging is the most understandable.
No thoughts on the ones when we are just sitting in ob class watching the demo and I look down and find a poop ball?...and how about the one in his bed?

does he have long fur around his butt? We had an issue with "sticking" with my parent's PWD and more careful care to trimming around there solved it.

This is what Im wondering. Don't know if he can't control it sometimes or if he's just a prince and doesn't care.

Don't know if this is relevant to your dog, but most dogs need to eliminate multiple times in an outing. If they're peeing, it's gonna take a number of squirts to really empty that tank. With some, it's the same with pooping.
So, I agree with Connie...chart your dog's eliminations for a few days, find out what his patterns are, then like Jamie, make sure you accomodate those needs before you get to serious walking or entering buildings or onto training fields. Build the time in you need to be able to make this happen. (This is a normal kind of routine before any kind of competition, for example...)
