I have been giving my PB calcium tablets (1 a day) for the last couple of days. She stopped eating her faeces almost immediately as a result. This is good because it means no more shitty morning breath, and bad because there are lots of little presents all over the place.
Andy what does the PB stand for? I have never heard of anyone using this to stop dogs from eating dog shit. Where did you hear about this and has anyone else ever tried it? I would think if it were this simple others would have known about this a long time ago.
No, I don't think you should be worming or supplementing. I think you should be making an appt w/a knowledgeable, competent vet. (Had to put that disclaimer on, not all vets are created equal).
DIY wormers can be very dangerous at worst, at best ineffective. The vet can take a stool sample and find out what, if any parasites are present.
Poop eating is *not* always dietary. It can become a habit very quickly for a variety of reasons.
My cairn has been eating poop since he was 9 wks old. He is now 12 yrs. We have never been able to stop this habit. We used Forbid but it never worked. Our vet told us to try putting hot sauce on the poop. But we were not carefull because he saw us do it and he quickly learned to associate the hot sauce with the spicy taste. Maybe if he did not see it the hot sauce idea might work. I just yell at him when he does it.
i caught my 4 month old border collie indulging in a little casual coprophragia ( on my product during a walk in the woods ) . i snuck up on him , administered a well timed scruff shake and that was the first and last time time i ever saw him " chow down " !
All my dogs have eaten shit. Every single stinking one. Some of them won't touch their own, but considered other turds as fair game. Some only wanted catshit, but all of them devoured fresh horse poop with zeal. I don't think it's necessarily "caused" by anything more complex than being, well, a dog.
I mean, come one-these are animals that lick each other's buttholes. It's what they do. Be grateful if they aren't fishing in the toilet for more, and forbid face licking.
It is hard not to attach the human stigma about feces to animal behavior, but give 'em a break. They don't work on our social taboos.
