My bf or soon to be ex left the garbage open. I came home to find a cheesewhiz jar broken, theres only a few larger pieces to be found with some shattered in small fragments. I can only assume they ate glass. There was a bit of blood on the floor. I checked paws and felt inside their mouths and dont feel or see any glass. Im FREAKING OUT!!! Do i rush them to emergency? Wait to x-ray tomorrow? Make them vomit? Feed them? Both pooped and looked normal, both acting fine. I think its gotta be my shepherd not my old guy who did the glass eating b/c when she gets something she will growl at the other dogs and they stay away. I had my other dog with me today. I have spent so much money on vets this last couple months im dead broke, so dont want to take them to emerg if I can avoid it, but will if you guys think they are bleeding inside.....Im sooo scared. If I had just cleaned the garbage before their walk I would've had time to get to a vet.....Im here all alone and panicing. I need advice please!!! Thank you!!!!

Don't panic, but I would take them in. The first thing I would think with the blood is a cut tongue.

It sucks, but I would take them in.
I saw once that they feed them cotton to "catch" the glass, but I would be terrified of causing a blockage......
go ahead and take them in.
Sry!!!!
Keep us posted!

I would take them in. I wouldn't induce vomiting due to the possibility of lacerating internal organs (like the esophagus) on the way back up. Try to stay as calm as possible.
Sending healing prayers and thoughts your way. Keep us posted.

Glass CAN be very dangerous if ingested. I would take them in just to be safe. I have had similar situations and it turned out that in cleaning the floor a few times, they hadn't really eaten much, if any, glass. I had a pup I sold eat some, and while she did have weeks of bloody (tarry) stools b/c the vet didn't catch it (kept insisting she had worms), she healed on her own and is fine.

I've heard of the cotton ball trick, and also a bread trick. Both supposedly have the same result of covering sharp edges.
Not that I'm saying those are an alternative to an e-vet visit, but something to definitely run past them if they don't mention it first.
Don't beat yourself up. It was an accident. One that I'm sure you'll look for in the future, but nothing that you did wrong tonight.
Sorry you guys are off to a crappy start for the night. I got a good feeling this will all be fine and you'll get to relax soon enough.

Thank you everyone for your quick responses and caring! I had of course googled about it and also read the cotton ball thing, but was hesitant. I knew if I called emerg they would say bring them in. My mom managed to get ahold of her friend who is a vet and she said she used the cotton ball method on dogs that had swallowed sewing needles etc and that it worked. She said if they started acting in discomfort or vomiting to bring them to emerg but that just to watch their poops and behavior etc. for now. I fed them cotton balls, and also bread soaked in salmon oil and pumpkin, read that would help absorb it and figured it couldnt hurt.
She also said x-rays may or may not be able to tell if there is glass, but to watch for bloody or tarry poops. I wish i had payed more attention to their poops on their walks and wishing I had just cleaned up the garbage before their walks so they could've had the bread and cotton balls then, hopefully its not too late now....On the bright side, I found two large peices of glass hiding under the recyling bag so they didnt eat as much as I tought...or maybe at all..fingers crossed.
Sorry for the ramble Im kinda all over the place tonight. Im praying they are ok, I dont know what I would do if anything happened to them especially if it was my fault(for not training bf better) I am going to wait and watch closely for now, I will take them to emerg for sure at the first sign of anything not quite right....praying and hoping....

Cat: how are the dogs doing now? Sorry to hear about your emergency and the panic that it can bring. I just had experienced that kind of thing with COdy in January.

Thanks Sharon, My first reaction is panic haha. They seem to be doing fine, ate, peed, no poops yet since yesterday but they usually wait for their walks to poop anyway so I am anxious to see what they look like! Will keep you posted on the poops lol. Thanks for asking. Cute pooch btw. What breed or mix is he?
