So, Jenga whines when I go up to the attic to do laundry - it's the cats' private space so he doesn't get to come up. I'm thinking I'm going to tackle this by having him do an extended down-stay while I go up (average of 5 minutes). He's not used to a stay for that long so it'll take a little training, but I don't mind.
I thought I'd ask, though; is this the easiest way to tackle this problem or is there something else I should be doing?

Hey everyone.
So, Jenga whines when I go up to the attic to do laundry - it's the cats' private space so he doesn't get to come up. I'm thinking I'm going to tackle this by having him do an extended down-stay while I go up (average of 5 minutes). I would crate him. Give him the command to crate, offer a treat as reward for going in willingly, then go to the attic. A 5-minute stay in the crate will probably be good for him. And you know he isn't getting into any trouble while you're away.
If you put him on a command (the down stay), then leave the room, you have no way to enforce or correct any disobedience/non-compliance. If you trained if for long enough that you were certain he'd be reliable, fine. But otherwise, just use the crate.
